Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 26, 2009 7:56 pm We have recently been quoted a very large amount for an extension that would be going out the back and front and moving lots of walls and replacing the entire roof etc (wont be a big house however). No one has suggested going up, we are guessing because it is too expensive. Why is it so expensive and where do the main costs lie? Thanks Re: going up or going out - extension 3Sep 26, 2009 8:09 pm Hi unsure, We went up in our old house in Melbourne (brick veneer) because we had no backyard to extend out into. The main extra costs, in my opinion, lie in strengthening the supports of the house to ensure they can bear the extra load of a second storey. We needed a lot of extra piers in place under the floor and some steel girders in the ceiling of the lower storey, it can get pretty expensive. And of course you will need a staircase to access the upper regions of the house, also not cheap.
