I am busy with an article for my website on designing and building a home office and I'm hoping you guys might have some thoughts on that that you would care to share. Would be hugely grateful for any and all suggestions. Annie K www.allaboutbuilding.co.za Re: Designing A Home Office 2Jun 18, 2007 10:04 am I could write reams about this, but the absolute most fundamental aspect is: Is your power supply up to the job ?
I run four computers and maybe 50 devices all up out of a single (very large) room in a standard suburban house. That pulls a lot of power. And now that it's winter I've plugged in a heater too. And there's another heater plugged into the room adjacent - all on the same circuit. So of course last night, "click", the overload protection kicks in and the power goes off. Lucky I also have very serious surge protectors on all the gear too. As this is a rental there's not much I can do to improve the power situation. but it really is fundamental. No power, no business. Re: Designing A Home Office 3Jun 18, 2007 3:59 pm I would agree with Cabinfever. Power is number one.
After that, I'd say: 2. Desk space - I need space to work 3. Light. Good lighting is essential. 4. Storage - Organisation and being able to find things is important. Pity I'm not organised. Cheers Perry Re: Designing A Home Office 4Jun 18, 2007 4:25 pm Many thanks guys - I have sent an email to our local Dial-A-Nerd now to try and get as much info as possible on wiring and setting up for technology - I image that would be number 1 on the list. With one out of six South Africans self-employed it seems that well-planned home offices are adding a lot of value to houses here and daily I am getting questions to the site about that aspect.
