Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 19, 2009 11:55 am Well we recently moved into our new home after renovating our first home which was a small duplex. The new house is a two story brick, 4 bedroom built in 1985. We felt the place had so much potential that we couldn't resist, and felt that this would be a good home for the next 5-10 years or more...provided we are willing to put in some hours of reno.
We have discussed major plans but the first stop was to remove the rather dated angled panelled wood and replace with plasterboard to the ceiling. That is happening this weekend. And then, lucky for us, I am on two weeks holiday and the painting will begin. I am sure some of you will be horrified to know that we are going to paint over all the wood on the ceiling with white. I am trying to convince my husband of using colour for the walls but at this stage we are painting it all Antique White USA. Once the walls have been done, the kitchen is our main priority. Our plan at this stage is to turn the stairs around (they are freestanding), so they come up near the windows, and basically turn the whole kitchen around so the pantry, stove/oven, and fridge will be up against the wall. We then want a large U bench to take up the majority of the space. Dividing wall to the lounge will be either knocked out (hopefully) or will become just a beam which will be where the dining table will go. Two sets of windows in the kitchen will be turned into sliding doors onto the deck. Here is an idea of what we are dealing with. Would love to hear your thoughts. http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/105873822al1247632680.jpg http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/105873822bl1247632680-1.jpg Re: The beginning of our next journey... 2Sep 19, 2009 12:27 pm horrified if you paint the timber - you mean horrified if you didn't!!! It will look great, timber paneling painted is very "in" at the mom, def don't plaster over... Good luck! A thankful person is a happy person. You'd be surprised how many people have said they wouldn't paint the wood, but it is just definitely not us. I think its worth the hard yakka! Lol. This is what we've done so far. http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/2009_9008.jpg http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/2009_9007.jpg http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/2009_9009.jpg Re: The beginning of our next journey... 4Sep 19, 2009 4:18 pm Ew. Definitely say goodbye to the wood. Not a fan at all. Renovation Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=38489 Re: The beginning of our next journey... 5Sep 19, 2009 5:45 pm The woods great, just way too much of the same color. That floor color has got to go and if it were mine i would find some way of "lightening" the cupboards. Under all that stain what is the natural wood color? Please leave the roof tho, looks great to me. Sorry to be so un helpfull. Bribie Island???? can i come up and help lol. Good luck and all the best. Re: The beginning of our next journey... the plaster is up! 8Sep 22, 2009 5:43 pm Sorry Daryl, we couldn't leave it. Have put in a couple of days hard yakka (with a few to go). Here is our progress on the ceiling so far. http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/2009_9029.jpg Full undercoat http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/2009_9037.jpg The divine wallpaper we discovered behind the light fittings. http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/2009_9038.jpg Tilly supervising http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/2009_9034.jpg First topcoat http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/Jek83/2009_9040.jpg We still need to finish half of the first topcoat and fill gaps with 'no more gaps' plus the second coat. I'm loving it so far. Sorry about the gigantor photos - having some issues with photobucket again today! Re: The beginning of our next journey... the painting has begun! 10Sep 22, 2009 11:06 pm Great job so far! I'm also renovating and we wish we took more before photos. You really opened up the space and modernised it. What kitchen style/colours/type are you looking to put in? Re: The beginning of our next journey... the painting has begun! 11Sep 24, 2009 5:36 pm I think I forgot how much I hate painting. This week has reminded me. I have been painting all week, and the ceiling still isn't finished. I really underestimated how much extra time painting the timber panelling would take. Am loving the look of it though. Have decided to leave the bottom half of the ceiling as we can reach that with a normal ladder and get the top of the wall painted tomorrow as we have to return the scaffolding by Saturday ($60 for the week - so reasonable!) I don't care if I don't finish tomorrow, after 4pm tomorrow, I am on official holidays and am going to start acting like it, rather than working myself to the bone lol! Hubby can contribute on his days off! Mango, I'm thinking mostly a white kitchen with a coloured tiled splashback. I really want to try and keep the modern country-ish feel that is created by the white ceiling. Kitchen will be a major reno - turning the whole kitchen around and putting in doors where the windows are at the moment. Hopefully will be happening Jan next year.
