Is it possible at all to live in the house while building is going on or must we move out? Hi. We are going through this process. It really depends on how much of the house can be isolated from the extension. We chose to pack up absolutely everything and move out. For us this including rolling up the carpets, boarding up the windows etc... Going back to the site every so often, it seems like that was a good idea. Needless to say, here are some of the things you will have to contend with : - Lots of dust, - Scaffolding and building material stored everywhere (means we can't use the garage or driveway), - Dirt and mud from tradies walking in and out of the house - Water damage to ceilings from recent storms - Tarps flapping about in the wind while the roof is off - Electricity and water connections cut off at random times - Random holes in the ceiling, light fittings popping out, possible water leaks while the roof is off - Did I mention the dust ! If you are able to live in an isolated part of the house with good access - then it might be possible to stay and would be no worse than being on site for any other "normal" lower level reno. You will also need to be sure that the builders and tradies are happy to accommodate and respect the fact that you are still living there. If you choose to stay, you should also have an exit strategy. Or maybe plan a holiday or two Good luck. Hi, We have a single story MacDonald Jones house, on a waffle pod slab with steel frame.
