Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 09, 2009 4:56 am i own a 4br weatherboard with a attached carport, i was just wondering, at what point do i need coucil approval as it may be deemed a garage, the plan was to extent the main house weatherboards front and back to frame the ends of the carport, so it appeared to be part of the main structure, but in reality just share a facade, and at the front end to build a steel frame behind the boards and mount a roller door, thus making my carport more secure. would this then be deemed a garage as it has a door? or still a carport as it doesnt have walls down the side? house wall encloses one side and divinding block fence encloses the other, so walls are not neccassary to keep a car locked in there, although they would create more security and and ensure there is no other way in. technically all i would have done is modify a an existing structure by adding a roller door, but if that requires council permits anyway, maybe i am better off actually getting a full garage built Re: when does a carport become a garage 2Sep 09, 2009 10:05 am I think it probably varies by council - with our council anything roofed has to have approval so no extra approval would be required to put walls on an existing carport (provided it was approved when built). Re: when does a carport become a garage 3Sep 09, 2009 10:42 am I think a garage is generally considered to be fully enclosed - ie have 4 walls and a roof whereas a carport has a roof and often the house wall as one wall but is open at the ends/other side - sometimes the fence forms the other side and the front may have a roller door. In our council you would require a permit to build a carport or even a roofed pergola. When we built a carport on our old house we needed a permit; a few years later we added a roller door to the front, did not need a permit for this. Your council may vary though Re: when does a carport become a garage 5Sep 12, 2009 3:41 pm once it reaches puberty? no seriously, i think its when it is fully enclosed like Helyn said, 3walls plus roller door. We currently have a carptort with roller door and fences on two sides, but since back is still open, its a carport. Caz & Co ALL MOVED IN!! Now comes all the hard work-decorating.... Just do it, I am sure council will let you know if you needed permission. Its not like you are changing the area or height or erecting something new, you are just modifying what you already have. I would call it a garage if it had a brick wall on the fence side all the way to the ceiling, and if it was under the main roof and had a plasterboard ceiling. Therefore I would still call yours a carport. Re: when does a carport become a garage 7Sep 13, 2009 12:45 am depends what council/planning scheme you are under, check there first ...in Brisbane, its something like "must not restrict overland flow of water", so can't have walls along the sides, I think you can have cladding to teh sides of the door I believe ...BUT adding framing/cladding to this would alter its classification I'm guessing. Re: when does a carport become a garage 8Sep 13, 2009 7:59 am buildingwithhamra I am sure council will let you know if you needed permission I doubt that council would ever be bothered about checking everyone's yards to see if they have any unapproved structures. The issues come up when you plan to sell or when you try to make an insurance claim (say after a flood or cyclone).
