Re: Costco 2Sep 01, 2009 9:15 pm I went to the Costco in Hawaii not long ago - everything was in bulk. I would be interested to see the prices here. Re: Costco 3Sep 01, 2009 9:28 pm I've been a member since July and I must confess had high expectations on the number of items on shelves however I have found prices not so good compared to Aldi or Safeway/Coles QVM is another contender for fresh produce. Comparing Costco overseas and this one in Melbourne there is still a long way to go they must stock up more items and forget competing with Ikea and or Bunnings for instance. Besides Costco overseas has a member's login and online catalogue we don't have that yet Besides there are products clearly not suitable to Australian taste and many foods are too spicy for the average shopper even if they may be authentic that necessarily follow the shopper will buy an Indian frozen meal for six. I was having a laugh at the first few thousands buyers standing ina queue for hours loaded their trollies with stacks of toilet rolls, loads of carrots, kitchen towels and soft drinks. Clearly there are quite a few people that have no idea of market prices but just impulsive buying. Hardly a saving if you ask me so I went on comparing prices with a notebook. For now I give Costco the benefit of the doubt but stay away for now bulk buying is not a solution it may well turn into a false economy (where you spent big $ for little value) and even quality may not be there. See my Costco shopping list Clearly plastic mats, meat, large bags of flour are the winners for the rest Aldi undercuts Costco now Woolies has cut its price of toilet rolls matching Costco. I think we should see stiffer supermarket competition soon.

You really have to do your research on prices (just because it's in bulk, doesn't mean the price is right!) and shop for what you actually do use - it's very tempting and before you know if you could have $300 in your trolley. Make sure you buy a membership online before you visit though! Re: Costco 7Jan 03, 2010 9:20 pm I went today and spent $300!! But alot of things are quite a bit cheaper. ie. nappies are 12c cheaper each then the select homebrand woolies ones. When you buy 186 in a box that adds up to quite a bit of savings. laundary powder is at least half the price and same as dishwashing tablets. Toilet roles are cheap, make sure you look at unit pricing as at first you might not think 36 rolls for $30 is cheap but then you notice that the rolls are nearly twice as big as a standard roll then it is quite cheap. I compared the prices to colesonline when I got home to double check what my DW told me in the store.. some things are similar in price but overall I think it is good. I nearly bought a fridge too as I finally found a side by side fridge with ice maker that isn't too high!!! It is 1700 high and will fit in my space that is only 1745 high. Most of them are about 1780 high. It is whirlpool and after checking on the net looks like it is a new model that just came out. It was going for 2099 and I called HN and they sell it for 2500 but would match the costco price even though it was below their "cost". Might ring around a few more and see if I can get it even cheaper.. Didn't really look at the meat or frozen section, will check that out next time.. the hot dog and drink for $2.50 is a great deal though.. Ive asked my friend to look for me next time she goes They have two brands huggies and kirkland.. huggies were more expensive. We bought the kirkland ones. They have good reviews over in the states and my DW isn't a fan of huggies as we have had leakage problems with them. Re: Costco 13Jan 03, 2010 10:24 pm ...and the membership fee is? I got the business membership as I have an ABN. Mon-Fri between 10am and 11am is for business members only. Not that I would likely ever go there at that time but is good to know. I saved about $150 dollars (on just one shop) based on woolies prices so the membership fee is not really an issue. And the stuff I bought will probably last 3 months. My wife even worked for one in the States when we lived there. Ultimately, you definitely do need to do your research on what you buy - not just because the prices can be comparable, but you could spend money on food you'll never eat. It could go bad before you even get through it all. Costco in America and Costco in Australia are likely to have a different method of operation. They've got to - economies of scale play a big part for Costco. I can see Costco trying to undercut Coles etc., but you can only undercut the local prices. Getting products to Australia is going to cost Costco, Coles, and every other store the same amount, so the bottom line doesn't fluctuate as much as it does in America. That discount that Costco is known for won't be as great here, I believe. At the end of the day though, it introduces competition - which is good for everyone, Costco member or not.
