Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 26, 2009 1:35 pm We are wanting to put in a floor to ceiling entertainment unit and shelving in the media room but are unsure of who would actually do this and what materials would be used. Would you get a carpenter to build something and paint or stain the wood or a kitchen company and use laminex? Re: Built in entertainment unit 3Aug 26, 2009 2:12 pm borg a cabinet maker will do this. Carpenters are too rough for this exercise. Make sure you add enough power points... 1. Amp 2. DVD player 3. PS3/Xbox/Wii 4. HD Tuner etc. Re: Built in entertainment unit 4Aug 26, 2009 2:29 pm joeygbh borg a cabinet maker will do this. Carpenters are too rough for this exercise. Make sure you add enough power points... 1. I wouldn't want to put a TV on the same board as a HTPC and decent Amp if I could help it... the smaller stuff I can agree with. No way that a TV, HTPC , AMP and other such appliances could draw over 10 Amps. Maybe if you had some Power AMPs in your home theatre setup it would be a different story. And I wouldn't go plugging in a bar fridge, vacuum cleaner, or radiant/blow heater into that power board. But everything else in your home theatre setup plus some device chargers... is safe on one power board. Re: Built in entertainment unit 10Aug 28, 2009 7:50 am Thats great! I think that integrating your air conditioning unit is a brilliant way of cooling your tv. Obviously the other side to all of those power points is that equipment like flat screen tv's, power amps, sat and cable boxes and HTPC need ventilation, which means at least space and airflow. If you having something built try and allow for ventilation for any hot appliances - the tv's have minimum requirements and the rest should be catered for somehow. Well how about that i didn't even think of that at the time! Was just trying to save space and incorporate the heater/air con into the entertainment unit. Also got soft close drawers for those little hands. My boys have discovered since it was installed about 6 weeks ago that the top makes great train tracks running those trains back and forth Re: Built in entertainment unit 12Aug 29, 2009 8:19 am If you want a cheaper option, you can have the same thing made up in MDF and paint it to match your walls or trims. Our kitchen cabinet maker did one for us in our old place and I painted it in gloss to match the doors and skirting boards etc. I don't think I have a photo, but we had a floor to ceiling unit made, about 3m wide, with drawers in the bottom half, custom-sized space for TV and computer components etc in the middle, and cupboards above. It had a bulkhead around it which we painted to match the wall and had cornice added to, and we paid $800, although that was around 8 years ago.... Painted in a hard gloss finish, it still wore very well and it was way cheaper than doing it in laminate. Re: Built in entertainment unit 15Sep 24, 2009 5:14 pm I finally got around to getting this quoted and I must say I was a bit shocked at the price. I got quoted for 4 cupboards across bottom with push doors, a narrow open shelf above for dvd etc, and then the same 4 cupboards on top. He has not done a drawing or anything so I am not sure if it is a unit that will slide into the space or if the top and bottom will be separate items. I need to discuss it further. The price was $2178 - and an extra $500 for vinyl. I have only just read this thread properly though and just saw the idea of MDF, this would solve my issue of trying to match to the Antique White USA walls. I could just paint it in gloss. My husband and I are now thinking of having a floating shelf with doors, and a narrow shelf above, then a separate shelf above the TV. I want to make the wall beind this the feature wall and use either wallpaper or paint. What do you think? Would you mount the TV on something to bring it forward a bit - my husband wants a 56 inch but I am trying to talk him down a little. Here are some photos we took in display homes, where I am trying to get my inspiration. I will have to get my husband to draw a pic tonight. Re: Built in entertainment unit 16Sep 24, 2009 7:37 pm MDF would work well - and I love the integrated look of a unit painted to match the walls or trims. You can have any style you like, and the same hardware etc as kitchen cabinets, but the cost should be way cheaper than doing it in laminate or vinyl. Of course you have to factor in the cost of paint and rollers etc, but that shouldn't be more than about $200 or so ...from memory, I think we had to use a sealer/undercoat on ours before painting with the gloss. Get a few more quotes - there can be big variations in price. And ask them to quote on both laminate and MDF. I might have to think about the MDF too. Thanks for the update! Re: Built in entertainment unit 18Sep 24, 2009 9:09 pm Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. It's the circuit load that matters, and all the points in a room are 99% certain to be on the same circuit. If anything, putting equipment like this in different points is a very bad idea since that's an ideal way to introduce earth loop hums into the audio. Do the hard jobs first.
