For one a tiled roof requires a lot more structural support, ie closer spacings, that custom orb (colourbond) does. I did ask that and they said that they haven't heard of anything. But its okay now. We changed facade and we like it. Villina with Trend facade Sydney Re: Colorbond v's tile 24Aug 25, 2009 11:02 am I've been living under the tiles for 25 years. The house is old and I have to replace cracked tiles almost every year, there're also occasional problems with capping and leaks. The roof's sagging in places because of the weight of waterlogged tiles. Quote: No more rats or leaky roof.....my choice would be colourbond anyday! I'm having rats/mice problem every year and have to put out poison into the roof each automn. No more tiles for me, the new house is under Colorbond and I love it. How do they get into tiled and why cant they get into colorbond. Also depends on the area your living in as to what you'd choose. Re: Colorbond v's tile 26Aug 25, 2009 6:54 pm Never mind rats and mice - my parents old house used to get possums in the ceiling space I imagine they lift up loose tiles and get under or get under loose tiles which have blown adrift in storms Re: Colorbond v's tile 27Aug 25, 2009 7:03 pm I am surprised that some builders charge MORE for colourbond - I had always considered it would be cheaper, especially added to what as been said re needing a stronger roof frame & more labour for tiles. I prefer tiles, maybe that is because that was the norm where I grew up. Re: Colorbond v's tile 29Aug 25, 2009 8:28 pm I've had both and I found they have their good and bad points. I prefer the look of tiles over colorbond but I don't like the fact that a tiled roof is no where near air tight. Sit inside the roof and you'll notice that there is light coming in from a million different directions and you can feel quite a breeze in there - no wonder why old houses have so much dust in the roof space. Since I've moved into my new house there has been roof leak after roof leak - broken tiles and bad sealing jobs around antennas etc. As for security, I don't know of anyone who ever had a break in though the roof. Why would they bother? An average sized man can kick in a door with hardly any effort. Unless you have security screens on all your windows and doors I wouldn't worry about the roof as a point of entry. From what I've seen the worst thing about colorbond is that once it's installed if it's a ** job there is no way to rectify it other than ripping it all up and starting again. If there are gaps in the corners or the roofing doesnt come down close enough to the gutter you can get entry points for birds etc and fixing it basically means ripping up the shole roof sheet and doing it again - at least with tiles it is a much easier to fix. Then again, ask people in Sydney who had their roof tiles smashed to pieces by hail which they would prefer. Re: Colorbond v's tile 31Aug 28, 2009 10:58 am Rats and possums can also get in under Colourbond roofs. I've lived under Colourbond for more than 20 years and you often hear a little scritch-scratch of the possums moving around up there. I originally was going to go colourbond as I've grown up with it and always liked it, but with the design of our house we opted for flat, shingle-look tiles. We think they just look a lot classier. Re: Colorbond v's tile 32Aug 28, 2009 2:07 pm Daryl I have yet to see tiles flying through the air under extreme wind conditions but i have seen many bits of tin flying around. Sorry had to put that in, just me. Daryl Tiles can lift and slide down the roof, especially ridge capping that has come loose. Re: Colorbond v's tile 33Aug 28, 2009 3:16 pm I hate to say this guys. But my mum and dad have colorbond on there 3-year-old home in Hocking, Perth. They currently have pretty serious mice problems, and yes, there in the roof. You can hear them chewing and running around on the inside of the ceiling. They have had leaks previously too. No problems since the repair job. And the roof can be noisy in very hot weather also. I've noticed it. Not bad in cold weather though. House also get very hot in summer. I myself have chosen clay tiles. In Graphite, I don't mind the look of colorbond, as long as it's not black. I'm really not a fan of black colorbond. Re: Colorbond v's tile 34Aug 28, 2009 3:35 pm We're going for colorbond, mainly because we prefer the look of it. My parents live in Perth and have a tin roof on their house which was built 20 years ago. They have never had a problem with mice/rats and never had a leak. Aesthetically colourbond looks newer but i like the classic look of having tiles. mmm i may not have explained that correctly... Also to those who like listening to rain, well i choose tile because i rather NOT hear anything when i'm asleep... i think tile roof sorta mask that a bit. Just always like tiles. grew up in a house with tiles, it sticks. Builder actually gave me the colourbond option, i chose tile and spent the money on a nice alfresco instead. i may be one of the few people who is not convinced of colorbond tiles as yet. but everything always comes down to personal taste. Re: Colorbond v's tile 36Aug 28, 2009 5:45 pm I am pretty sure colourbond is dearer than tiles, but I am not sure by how much Re: Colorbond v's tile 37Aug 29, 2009 12:37 am buildingwithhamra I am pretty sure colourbond is dearer than tiles, but I am not sure by how much I think like most things it depends what sort of tiles. Although my builder has included tiles with the superior upgrades and colourbond as standard.....but I am building with an architect and therefore a smaller builder so not sure if that makes a difference. Re: Colorbond v's tile 40Aug 29, 2009 10:58 am Another vote for colourbond, our family home was tiles and they were terracotta and while I really liked them my parents spent a small fortune getting the roof fixed up, I was a long time after it was built but the roof look terrible with a build up of moss etc. Our roof went on our new house a few weeks ago and I was slightly worried as to what it would look like, when it went on we were SO pleased with the look, we have a 25deg pitch and it looks very stately/classy. I'm pretty sure our builder charged the same price for colourbond or tiles. Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10209 Hi all, Our boundary perimeter fences need replacing (3 sides). From everyone's experience, what would you install? Timber lapped and capped OR colorbond? Thank you. 0 2882 You should pressure clean your roof first and make sure the paint you buy also is anti mould. 4 18569 |
