Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 20, 2009 4:22 pm We are getting built-in wardrobes installed in our bedroom and having a debate about how long they should be... I reckon they should be wall-to-wall as you can never have enough storage space, but my husband thinks it will close the room in too much. The room is 3.5m X 3.6m. We're planning to leave a gap at the top as we have quite high ceilings, so hopefully that will assist with the sense of space? Re: Built-in wardrobes 2Aug 20, 2009 4:28 pm Is it a WIR? The whole point is to store clothes, so in my opinion the bigger the better! Re: Built-in wardrobes 3Aug 20, 2009 4:38 pm As Bam said, the bigger the better. I have allowed full width BIR's to all bedrooms (and as wide as they would go if the door was on the same wall). A half long BIR may look funny in a room that size. I also think it would look odd if you left a gap over them. How high are your ceilings ? You don't have to build the doors full height. Just build them to a standard height, then put a bulkhead above them. The bulkhead will neaten up the look, avoid the dust problems with leaving a "lid" on anything and the extra space behind the bulkhead can appear above the shelf in the BIR if you so please. I think the ceilings are about 3m high and they have an ornate border, which is why we were thinking of leaving a gap, so that the border wasn't interrupted and uneven on one side, but you make a very good point re the dust factor! Re: Built-in wardrobes 5Aug 20, 2009 5:13 pm Got a sketch of the room ? You could run the ornate cornice around the bulkhead, therefore leaving the clean lines. The only disadvantage of the bulkhead is the room may, as you said, appear smaller (by 600mm which will be the depth of the BIR). Settlement is in September, but we want to get the built-ins put in immediately otherwise we've got nowhere to put our clothes! (Also need to paint immediately, get a new hot water system immediately, fix the electrics immediately...) But your advice has definitely helped! Re: Built-in wardrobes 8Aug 20, 2009 5:27 pm Rather than bulkhead, you could put cupboards inbetween the normal height & ceiling/moldings to accomodate out of season clothing. I think I've managed to convince my husband that wall to wall built-ins are the way to go! And we were already planning to incorporate some mirrors and paint the room a nice warm white to give a sense of space, so good to know we're on the right track there. Now all I have to do is move in!! Re: Built-in wardrobes 12Aug 22, 2009 2:20 am Can anyone recommend a good wardrobe/cupboard builder in the South Morang area?
