Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 18, 2009 8:52 pm I have noticed that many new home plans have no window in the ensuite or maybe the toilet. Now call me or DH for that matter old fashioned, but....... What happens with the smell???????????????????????? Not from me as I'm a sweetie and everything smells of roses But you get my meaning....... if things get really bad you normally can open a window! I look at house plans and.................... So many work for the other rooms (especially if you want all your views from the back of the property) if you have this senario. But DH wont even entertain the idea of a loo with no window So what are peoples views on this, has times changed and am I still in the dark ages? or do exhaust fans work better than windows anyway????????? It is really causing me difficulties As I trying to work out the perfect house plan, (yes I know they dont exsist, cause after you live in one for a while you will see things you would do differently ) But if I have this I would have so many variations of plans. Its the same with passage way I have always tried to draw up plans where I wouldnt be wasting squareage on these Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Just a funny question 2Aug 18, 2009 9:22 pm Our powder room wont have a window, but changing its location really wasnt possible as I wanted other things in certain spots. Exhaust fans work fine, never had a problem with one. Something funny though (or not so much actually) is that in my inlaws house they have the normal toilet for guests downstairs and in the front room they have another toilet (was used for my husbands late grandmother, now his brother) but both exhaust fans are connected so if one of the fans is on then the smell gets pushed in to the other bathroom Tis not very nice..... believe me! Thats why I love the upstairs toilet lol Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Our Crazy Owner Builder Journey! I'm like your Dh Taffy, a loo window was on our list of must haves. Exhaust fans work just fine, our old house had one, but I wanted a window. Some display homes I looked at had the ensuite window at the front of the house (as in above and to the side of the front door How welcoming would that be! One way to get rid of door knockers Re: Just a funny question 5Aug 18, 2009 10:27 pm When designing my Duplex I wanted all bathrooms to have a window and they all do! I don't think it is that much of a problem though if there is no window. And exhaust fan is ok and if you can't have a window then not to worry, its not the end of the world. Yeah, to fresh air I say Re: Just a funny question 8Aug 19, 2009 2:02 am Have a box of matches in there. Light one when there's a bad smell (particularly after brothers have been in there!), hold it up for a few seconds and the smell disappears! Great trick I learned years back (unfortunately just before I moved out of home and away from stinky brothers ) Works faster than a fan or window from my experience! What would possess an architect/draftsperson for volume builders not to include windows in such rooms? On a separate matter (but related to windows...) why is double glazed windows not considered as standard in new homes (given that there are various thickness/thinness to double glazing)? We modified our kitchen design to have a window feature where our kitchen splashback is (since we're not positioned in the best of places where the sun is concerned). The cost for knocking a hole in the wall and fitting in a double glazed glass pane came up to $200 only. Since we had extras added into the house design, we couldn't include double glazed windows for the house throughout...so we'll do this later...especially for the windows that are west facing.... So when it came time to build our house I wasn't so worried when the main toilet didn't have a window.... I would prefer a window but the house was the best design for everything else and the block its one thing i can deal with! 2nd build here we come in Whittlesea! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=92617 1st Build - Henley - Cooper in Doreen! In SA it is a legal requirement that a toilet without a window must have an exhaust fan and it must be connected to the light switch. Off topic a bit, but I also prefer kitchens with windows and I have noticed it is very common for them not to do so in modern house designs - this one would be more of an issue for me. Re: Just a funny question 13Aug 19, 2009 9:49 am We have a window in all toilets except the upstairs powder room which is in the middle of the house kind of, and I have exhaust fans in all of them as well, I like to have a back-up plan. The fans work great Taffy but if your toilets have an external wall then try and have a window, it doesn't have to be big, there's nothing like fresh air Re: Just a funny question 14Aug 19, 2009 12:05 pm Speaking of exhaust fans, do you know that some older houses in Canada don't even have exhaust fans in the toilets/bathrooms? But they do have windows.... I can picture the young lady sitting with a certain look on her face . . . but I just can't remember the name of it. Personally I like windows, even if it's not strictly necessary I like windows. Re: Just a funny question 16Sep 12, 2009 3:02 am Just been looking at options to upgrade the ventilation in our bathroom, (which has a toilet behind a half wall at one end). Came across this... http://www.loofloo.com/LooFloo/LooFloo_ ... _Home.html I think they are not the only ones who make toilet ventilation systems. Can be a good option I guess. Anyone got them? Ash. You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want. Cabinetmakers use MDF because its cheap… 2 9957 I would say both styles you have pictured are steel.
