Browse Forums General Discussion Re: While Designing your Garage…… 21May 30, 2007 6:29 pm We have been lucky in that our block has 23 metres frontage, so we have opted for a triple garage (i.e. a double garage, with the extension for a 2nd roller door).
Width of garage = 8.49m Depth = 6.6m I'm happy with that, enough room for 2 cars, as well as storage space - which as everyone knows is never enough. Oh don't forget the extra powerpoints. Re: While Designing your Garage…… 23May 30, 2007 7:33 pm HANDBAGS…..now your talking.

I have left behind a garage at 6x6 and am going to 8x7.5 and looking forward to it. We have 2 large cars and they just dont fit.. Re: While Designing your Garage…… 25May 31, 2007 9:04 am I found the best thing I did was to allow for plenty of power points.
Even when i've got all my power tools on recharge there's always a point free for my other half to plug in the vaccuum cleaner and do her womanly chores cleaning up after me !! Re: While Designing your Garage…… 26May 31, 2007 9:42 am I'm interested in how much people pay for the extra garage size. Before we pulled the pin on our home, we optioned the garage to increase the width by one metre. The extra cost was $2,500.
Yep - $2.50 per mm. Seems like a lot to me, but if you want it, it's pretty hard to add later on. Cheers Perry Re: While Designing your Garage…… 27May 31, 2007 10:10 am To increase width to 8.5m $5917 (also includes 1 x timber window and 2 x 2.4m doors in place of 1 x 4.8m door.)
To increase depth 1.5m $2746 (also includes rear roller door for drivethrough access.) Matt Re: While Designing your Garage…… 28May 31, 2007 2:16 pm perry - try $17k for a 1.5m extension in length of the garage, entry way, study and upstairs in the master bedroom and walk in wardrobe Re: While Designing your Garage…… 29May 31, 2007 3:20 pm As it costs about $700/m2 to build a project home, it should cost about $4200 to add 1m to the width of the garage (6m long).
But the garage is a simple structure so the price should be lower than $700/m2, maybe $400-$500/m2. But then, builders seem to charge more for extras, so it could be the same or higher. Perry, $2,500 seems like a good deal. And Matt, I would say your price is in this ball park as well, as you added about 12m2 to the width, so all good. Make sense? Matt, all garages should be 8x7.5m, at least. I'm jealous. Re: While Designing your Garage…… 31May 31, 2007 6:25 pm It’s Official: Men Are From The Garage, Women Are From The Kitchen
Hey Peter, Where'd you find a woman you could let loose in your garage with a VC and be able to find things afterwards ??? Well done and I totally agree re the PP's. How much value does a garage add to the house, Hmm hard to put a figure on it - but it's something I see as a adding value and the latest relaestate search said it did as well. Just think about his fuel bill.
In my perfect world, garages wouldn't be required because there would be no cars. An extra room for pushies would suffice. I seriously cannot believe how much emphasis people put on garages. We've gone from living in a McMansion estate on the outskirts of Brisbane, but got sick of it (after about 1 week), sold up and moved to an old house about 7 - 8km from the city. Our art deco garage is only just big enough to fit our late model Corolla, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'd rather more yard than more garage... FYI we have a 'bike room' in our house, which is home to our (4) beautiful bikes... which are used extensively for commuting so that people with two car garages can drive their cars to work (as single occupant vehicles, of course). Lotte Re: While Designing your Garage…… 33Jun 04, 2007 6:06 pm My garage is a double 5.5x7.5. My partner loves the fact that there is a single roller door on the back 1/2 of the garage. He can reverse his car into the garage and have his trailer hanging out the back. Better for him considering his trailer contains over 10k of tools. Lucky for him his motorbike should fit too. We have 2 large cars and they just dont fit.. Matt, looks like my 7m wide garage is going to turn into a 6m wide so that I can go from a 1m setback from the side fence to 2m. It probably makes more sense in the long run. Is 6m wide really too narrow? how hard is it to walk around cars? It will be 6.5m deep. Re: While Designing your Garage…… 35Jun 04, 2007 8:33 pm Noooooooooooooooo!!
That metre is the most important!! Who says you need a 2 metre setback on the garage side. The garage can be built against the fence in most areas.. The other side needs to be between 1.5 and 1.8m setback in most areas but not the garage. If you have 2 largish cars you will really miss the extra width... Matt Re: While Designing your Garage…… 36Jun 04, 2007 8:44 pm put it this way, there is currently 1m of space on either side. the garage is on the side where it makes sense for the extra space to be since that gives access to the rear patio/backyard area. its also another $4000 off my already over budget cost.
Maybe I can talk to them about shaving it back only half a meter....? will talk to them tommorow I guess. Re: While Designing your Garage…… 37Jun 04, 2007 8:59 pm Nah!!
Simple, just buy a bigger block!! Does the garage allow for rear access to the backyard?? By building it out to the boundary (leaving 1 meter on the other side) could you put a door on the back to access your backyard? Matt Re: While Designing your Garage…… 40Jun 04, 2007 10:30 pm brittany Currently I have a six metre wide garage - my car lives outside and hubbies inside as there is no way it is comfortable for both. Now I'm worried. I though 6 m wide was fairly generous with some double garages being 5.5 m wide. brittany, do you have exceptionally large cars? Is the garage really 6 m wide? Even a large car such as a Holden Commodore with it's 1899 mm width would give you on average 734 mm between cars/walls. The first click stop on my car (Mazda 323) is 500 mm, so 734 is generous. (Mazda 323 = 1755 wide, therefore 3 x 830 mm gap) (Mazda 626 = 1780 mm wide, therefore 3 x 813 mm gaps) I bet your garage is not 6 m wide!
