Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 27, 2009 8:27 am Hi all, Just wondering who you guys use for PPOR home insurance? We are finding it very difficult to find good quality cover. When we moved over here form the UK, we fully itemised everything we shipped so it could be properly insured. We have updated this inventory with everything we have purchased here in Australia. When you look at all the material things you actually own it is surprising how much it amounts to! Whilst getting cover for the sum total is not a problem, the single article limits and limits on collections etc leave a lot to be desired. As an example, most policies I have read so far will only covered DVD's to a maximum of $1000 for your total collection! Having a huge collection of books, CD's and DVD's means if we were to suffer say a total loss fire we'd hardly be covered! The other thing that has surprised me so that a lot of companies don't cover smoke and soot damage where the articles have not also been directly affected by fire. Now, this seems a real grey area. One company spelt out that it meant if say next door had a fire, you wouldn't be covered for smoke damage, but other companies don't make it clear and seems as though if you had say a fire in the living room the resultant smoke damage upstairs may not be covered? It's the single article limits that are the pain, we have things like cycles, AV equipment, camera's etc that are a fair but more per item than most places will cover - even under their specified articles additional cover. So, I am now armed with a full inventory and value of each item to insure, this inventory has on it highlighted all the items that are used away from the home for additional cover. Does any one know of an old fashioned style insurance company, or perhaps specialist insurance company that I can send the list to and have cover that actually means we are properly insured? Thanks. Re: Good home insurance? Anyone have it? 2Jul 27, 2009 8:34 am This is a very interesting topic, ill be watching closely. Most people dont realise just how bad their (Expensive) insurance is until its too late. Many Insurance companys are in the game of not paying if possible, so itl be interesting to see if anybody has experience in this area. Re: Good home insurance? Anyone have it? 3Jul 27, 2009 10:18 am I have a few nice bikes and as such I am insured through an insurance broker but they use QBE to under write it. The company is IHGroup and the policy I am on is their CycleSafe Insurance. I have a few cycling friends also with them who have claimed and they are super easy to deal with. Their phone number is 03 54831066 I just got my renewal and on one of the pages it has this: Quote: Valuables You have automatic cover under this policy for jewellery, gold or silver articles, furs, watches and collections of any kind anywhere in Australia or New Zealand and also elsewhere in the world for up to 90 days any one period of insurance. The policy sum insured for this item is $10,000 per item up to 25% of your contents sum insured on unspecified contents when at home. Please let us know if you wish to insure items in this category for a higher sum insured 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' I had a few suggestions from another forum to try Suncorp. They seem to have a superb reputation, and cover appears excellent. Quote was a little higher than others I have tried, but their cover is vastly superior - and at the end of the day, that's the important bit. So - Suncorp here we come! Thanks. Re: Good home insurance? Anyone have it? 6Jul 28, 2009 1:45 pm Perhaps what we should be doing is talking about insurance companies that have done a ******* and ripped people off. That way we know if we should change from our present provider if somebody had a bad experience with them. Re: Good home insurance? Anyone have it? 7Jul 28, 2009 1:49 pm We are with Westpac General Insurances and have found their coverage excellent. We have contents cover which allows us to cover all items all over the world - so a camera is covered for accidental damage / theft etc no matter where we are in the world - same with prams / car seats / jewellery everything that can be taken out of the house. My younger sister is also with them and when they were robbed a couple of years ago Westpac paid on proof by way of photos. So now what I tell everyone is to take photos or video footage of everything within their home - even down to putting on your jewellery and taking photos of it. Then store the tape / memory card is a safe place should you ever need to make a claim. Some things are worth waiting for. Hi All, I just wanted to close this topic out with an update.
