Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 26, 2009 10:06 pm Hi everyone, Just wondering what the builders range of carpet is like in general? Is it the very basic, awful carpet that you have to upgrade? Or is it something that you can live with? I'm not after anything fancy but do want it to look good and not wear away within the next 5 years. I'm about 3-4 weeks out from going to my colour selections, but I can't find out what range of carpet I will get until I have picked out my floor tile and been to selections. Any thoughts??? I think they pick the builder's standard range so it is long lasting.. but not exactly the nicest kind.. so we had to up-grade coz we just didn't like what was offered. We wanted something "softer" under foot, wasn't a huge up-grade, but was still something. Built with New Generation (Summit Homes) We own land!... with a slab on it! Plus a shell of a house with stuff inside ! Re: Builders range of carpet 3Jul 26, 2009 10:48 pm I know with our builder the standard range carpet was alright but certainly not great. We upgraded the carpet to the highest option that they had (I can't remember the exact type) and it cost around an extra $2,000. Just have a look and see if you like the standard carpet. We wanted something really soft. We have chosen a sisal for the first time in the hope that it's more hard wearing while the kids are young (2 boys ). The sample felt surprisingly soft under foot and we have upgraded the underlay as apparently that can make a big difference to how good the carpet feels. Re: Builders range of carpet 5Jul 27, 2009 8:30 am We found the standard range wasn't great..and even the highest they had was very limited in colour and choice..not to mention expensive. We went to the carpet supplier and had a look and mentioned who we were building through and got nicer, and more expensive carpet through them for about 15% less than what we would have paid through the builder. We have similar in rental place at the moment. Quality is fine, obviously not as beautiful as carpet can be, but it will do the job for us until the kids are older and we are richer! Only going in the bedrooms and home theatre, so it should hold up OK. I hope your builder has a nice standard range for you to choose from. buzz PS carpet in rental is 4 years old, still looks fine. Re: Builders range of carpet 7Jul 27, 2009 11:31 am Ours was pretty bad.. not the best carpet. We had to upgrade through the carpet place for about $2000 extra. I think it will be well worth it. Re: Builders range of carpet 8Jul 27, 2009 6:22 pm I'm with the same builder as Chedasha, and yeah it was pretty basic. The kind of stuff that you could live with, but isn't going to win any prizes for how it looks/feels. I actually had the same stuff in a previous rental and probably the best thing you could say about it was it was easy to clean - which would probably be why the landlord chose it. We upgraded a couple of levels to get something that felt soft/nice Re: Builders range of carpet 9Jul 27, 2009 6:28 pm When I worked at Carpet Court, the builders rang was very average. I wouldn’t use it, only because I know carpet well and how they perform. If you can afford to, I’d upgrade if possible. I'm a bit shocked at the price of an upgrade though! Here I am thinking maybe $500 - $1000! Well ummmm I think I'm going standard then lol I'm wanting to upgrade my bricks *fingers crossed* so I'll put that upgrade money into them! Thanks again everyone, its been enlightening Deposits paid 29/4/09 Land settlement 12/08/09 Build contract signed 24/08/09 Colours done 28/09/09 BLOG-http://www.eljaysbuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Builders range of carpet 11Jul 27, 2009 7:50 pm Eljay Oh wow thanks everyone! Thanks again everyone, its been enlightening We were going to go with the builders range, but ended up upgrading, and paying less in the process! Our contract included builders range carpet and around $6500 was the allowance for it in the contract. Anything better would have cost more. With permission from the builder we deleted carpet from the contract, went to the same supplier, went for an upgrade, and had it installed the day before handover for around $5500. According to the supplier, for builders range, the price should have been around $4000 installed. Our builder looked after us. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Builders range of carpet 12Jul 28, 2009 4:41 pm Check the underlay, most times builders use the cheapest available and this will make a big difference to the feel it will be (harder underfoot). Cheers http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: Builders range of carpet 13Jul 28, 2009 6:50 pm take2 Check the underlay, most times builders use the cheapest available and this will make a big difference to the feel it will be (harder underfoot). Cheers Our builder didn't include any underlay in the standard! Re: Builders range of carpet 14Jul 31, 2009 8:51 pm Kash Our builder didn't include any underlay in the standard! Eww. So *******. As mentioned, underlay is worth considering. We are building with Coral and they have a few ranges - Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Bronze wasn't half bad actually, i've seen much worse quality and had worse quality put in when we recarperted a few rooms in the old house but we went with Silver as the carpet/underlay combo was soft as So yeah, all builders use different suppliers and have different ranges. Hey Alk, How much was the upgrade to the Silver range and what was the underlay grade or type called if you remember? Thanks Re: Builders range of carpet 16Jul 31, 2009 10:43 pm walker79 Hey Alk, How much was the upgrade to the Silver range and what was the underlay grade or type called if you remember? Thanks No idea sorry. We loved how soft the carpet felt in the Warner Hammy display home so we just told our SC that we wanted that and she told us what range it was from. Carpeting our Hammy 278 (with extensions) Front lounge, study, bedroom 1, bed 2, bed 3 and bed 4 was $4351. So the upgrade obviously doesn't cost that much extra. I'm happy about that Re: Builders range of carpet 18Aug 05, 2009 9:28 am Well I got the opportunity to drop buy where I'll be getting my carpet yesterday and it wasn't to bad! The builders range I looked at ($100 p/linear metre, inc install) was a nice(ish) plush style carpet. Range of colours wasn't to bad, a tad boring though. I found the colour I was after but it would cost me an extra $1200! The standard colours where 3 tones of brown, cream, dark dark green, chocolate. To upgrade to the next one up which was a twist was going to be an extra $200. The twist one felt quite harsh but the standard plush didn't feel to bad. But I don't like the marks you get in plush. I had that in my canberra house and being able to see everywhere you walked drove me nuts! And the vaccum marks arhhhhhh lol What do you prefer....plush or twist? Our upgrade was to plush lol...the builders standard was school room carpet basically. 1 11004 1 15753 they can, it's a fairly standard solution when the slab isn't recessed. the falls need to be in the main floor, if it hasn't been done then you need to ask them to redo… 4 6584 |
