Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 22, 2009 7:21 pm We already do replacement windows so I wondered how many people who have existing homes would consider having new double glazed windows installed - if the price was right. The example prices are just to get an idea if this is worthwhile - choose what you think would make you feel like it was worthwhile for you. Take into account this is a completely finished solution from curtains down to curtains up. Say 2 days for a single storey and 3 days for double. At the end I will publish an idea of prices. Re: Would you replace your old windows with new double glazed? 3Jul 22, 2009 8:40 pm I haven't been around here long but my impression is that there are a lot of people on this forum building new homes or who have recently completed homes. I wouldn't be surprised if just about none of those would vote yes. However, as someone who has only lived in older homes I would definitely consider it. We have an early '70s house with walls of glass (much of it south-west facing). I've been wondering whether DG units would fit into the existing timber frames so we could just replace the glass. As far as replacing all the windows, i would personally prefer to do this with timber & I'm sure the price would be prohibitive. It may - just measure the depth of the glazing rebate (the part where the glass fits) - you need about 20mm... If it costs me $15K to change all windows, then in what duraion will I get that money back? ROI. Funny story: In my previous job, we were asked by state govt to look at the optiopn of putting solar panels on the roof a new (massive) warehouse. Analysis was done and if it was sunny the whole day for 62 years, then the initial investment would have been recovered. Anyone's guess what was done. But to reduce the impact of using electrical fittings, 40% of roof panels were translucent. Re: Would you replace your old windows with new double glazed? 10Jul 23, 2009 8:51 am I have already replaced some crappy alu windows with standard - not double glazed -timber (cedar) windows and as it was that cost me a touch over $6k for 4! I shudder to think what my entire house would cost with double glazed windows (I have another 10 windows plus the 4 already done ). Re: Would you replace your old windows with new double glazed? 11Jul 23, 2009 10:47 am I'd contemplate double-glazed windows if the neighbours used their balcony more and became very noisy at night. But I'd have to weigh the cost of the windows against the cost of a few bullets. Tricky one! Re: Would you replace your old windows with new double glazed? 12Jul 23, 2009 10:52 am I would need to understand the cost difference ... first of all the windows would need replacing before I contemplating replacing them at all ... then I would need to find out the difference in $ between replacing them in single glazed and double glazed. If it cost $20k more, I would probably say no. 3 of my 4 kitchen servery window panes are badly scratched which I am having replaced. This is costing me $500; I would not consider just getting them in double glazing because every other window in that big room with lots of window space is single glazed, and I think that would be a waste! Re: Would you replace your old windows with new double glazed? 14Jul 24, 2009 8:40 am I'd love the replace with double-glazed, but the astronomical rip-off prices in Australia make that a far away dream. The price comparison between here and the US & Europe is just incredible. Do the hard jobs first. I've noticed that all such calculations use the current prices of electricity/energy. This falsifies the picture, as they rise quite fast now and will continue to rise. The more realistic approach would be to calculate the cost/benefit using rising prices, expected term of occupancy and improvement in the sale price. Back to the main subject - yes want double glazed windows, but all figures in the survey are out of my league. I've paid approx $7K extra to have double glazed uPVC windows in my new house, but I've imported them from Europe, with all the risks this implies.
