Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 21, 2009 11:37 am Hey Guys, I am going to build a verandah over 5.5m x4.8m area in my courtyard which is actually on the back side of my garage so thats not visible from front of the house and would be difficult to see from backof the house because of other houses. I know that i would be needing a permit (with dispensation)to build it but a builder who gave me a quote on verandah suggested me that i should not go for a permitt as verandah would not be visible from front and my next door neighbours are renting so should not be an issue, if anything happens i can get it in future. This way i would be able to build my verandah till fence , with permit i have to be 2m away. Do you guys think it would make sense to not to go for permit & or would that be a mistake ?? Any suggestions please. What would you do in my scenario ? Cheers, Namit I am in Point Cook,VIC Re: Permit for building Verandah 2Jul 21, 2009 12:07 pm I dont think its a good idea to build without a council permit, especially if you plan on building something council would not allow I would be rather suspicious of a builder who suggested you dont get a permit - what else is he going to do that doesnt meet regulations??? Next doors tenant or their landlord are able to complain to council and then what?? In our council you would have to take it down and apply for permit - we know someone who put up a shed without a permit and they had to do this, even though plans were then approved for exactly what they had built - they then had to rebuild it We have just built a pergola/verandah behind our garage, at side of house, exactly as you describe; in our council you can build these things right to boundary if neighbours give permission - we sought permission from them, they signed a form to say they do not object and away we went. In our council you can build to within 900mm of boundary unless neighbours agree to going right to boundary. Re: Permit for building Verandah 4Jul 22, 2009 4:02 pm yeah i think u guys are correct..its too risky to do thing without a permit...that builder seems ******* to me...let me explore more options..by the way any comments for my other thread viewtopic.php?f=17&t=20708 Any builder that anyone can recommend to get some more quotes ?? Hi, I'll be starting on my verandah repair soon - replace ledger, rafters, roofing iron, flashing etc. (fascia board already done). My question is about the timber ledger… 0 930 1 1340 No, not yet.
