Browse Forums General Discussion Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 21Jul 06, 2009 9:30 am In my extension I've recreated my existing layout in my laundry/mudroom ... I really wanted a toilet that was easily accessible from outside, that didn't require removal of boots etc, had its own basin and was separate from the main bathroom. And (getting a bit personal) ... near the main entrance because I can't tell you how many times I get home absolutely busting It will be a slight pain for visitors staying over, to have to walk from the bedrooms to the toilet (down a hallway) ... but it does mean that visitors coming for dinner etc can easily access the toilet without ever having to see the rest of the house. Also ... if I have people who need to use the toilet but I don't want through the rest of the house - I can lock off the rest of the house and they can access it whilst I'm not home. Just got to get some nice weather so the builders can build it!! Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 22Jul 06, 2009 10:12 am I don't really think about toilets that much Also I haven't really been through many single story display homes and most of our family/friends have double story homes so again I have never really had to deal with the issue of a toilet's location in a single story home. BUT I think if I were to build one, I'd like one toilet for the main bedroom ensuite, one near the kids rooms, and a seperate one perhaps near a laundry/family/lounge room for guests to use. My karma ran over your dogma Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 23Jul 06, 2009 10:49 am I don't mind it near the bedrooms, but I don't really think about it that much. Ideal world you'd have a powder room but can't be justified for a house with just over 23 squares. The thing I hate is having toilets (& laundries) next to the kitchen - there's only one smell I want in my kitchen and thats not coming from a toilet or laundry!! ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 25Jul 06, 2009 2:29 pm da68za my pet hate is when the there is no sink in with the toilet and you have to use the one in the bathroom ... And I thought peeing on the lemon tree was out there?......lol Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 26Jul 06, 2009 2:59 pm My rule when we build our dream home will be no toilet sharing a wall with a bedroom (ensuite exempt of course - but must have door to toilet not open plan) - who wants to lay in bed and listen to the 'noises'? I have been through a display home that was well laid out and had the 2nd toilet between the bathroom and laundry. Renovating a post-war house in Brisbane | On the first rung of the property ladder Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 27Jul 06, 2009 9:23 pm We have a large entertaining area and the toilet is located next to the bathroom in the minor bedroom area. If I could turn back time we would have included a powder room. Oh Well.........Knowing my friends, I better plant a lemon tree. Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 28Jul 06, 2009 11:59 pm Most of the standard single storey floorplans l've seen don't have the toilet directly next to the minor bedrooms, it's usually goes bathroom, toilet, laundry (or vice versa). Our house (40sq single storey) will be like this, the toilet is a nice distance from minor bedrooms for privacy and not too far to access from the living areas. If l could've added a 3rd toilet l would've put a powder room somewhere in or off the garage but definitely nowhere near or in sight off any living areas. In this rental, you can see the toilet door from the family room lounge suite and l hate it!! Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 29Jul 07, 2009 5:33 pm There is no option in the poll that I would choose. I think it is possible to have a bit of a "balanced" WC location - near the bedrooms, but in the same time accessible from other areas of the house. And I think we managed to do that with out floor plan (couldn't upload the picture - done now) But I agree that for some reason most of the floor plans from big builders have toilet in very strange places. That's why we chose to go with a small builder and a custom plan. Actually, bedroom 2 will be a study. I guess it's our builder's preference to call any room with BIR a bedroom. Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 32Jul 08, 2009 5:09 pm If I was to build a single story I'd have a powder room for guests, and a toilet in the family bathroom for family. It might be a bit excessive, but I wouldn't want guests in the 'family area' and I wouldn't want the kids to have to traipse out of the bathroom to use the toilet. Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 33Jul 08, 2009 5:44 pm I remember seeing a plan where there was a wc at the front of the house which was off the ensuite but accessible to guests without having to go through the master bedroom. I thought that was quite a good idea. As a keen gardener I'd like a mudroom with a wc off it. Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 34Jul 09, 2009 3:09 pm We have a 2 storey and the main toilet downstairs is off the laundry. I have always been a fan of having the toilet off the laundry, it has more privacy. I have been to some houses where the toilet is in the main hallway, not a fan of that. Had a girlfriend who turned a cupboard in her dining are into a toilet. Not a good place for a toilet. We actually thought a lot about toilet placement before we built, maybe we're just weird. Off the laundry is good too because when the kids are playing outside they can just come into the laundry from the outside and straight into the toilet. Our upstairs toilet is at the top of the stairs and to the left so visiitors don't have to wander through the top storey to find it. Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 35Jul 09, 2009 4:27 pm Hi, off the topic a little.. but I have found a toilet placement fault at my house: the loo is too far from the loo paper. The toilet needs to be just a little closer to the wall. The kids nearly fall off Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 36Jul 09, 2009 6:11 pm photogirl, I agree with you re toilets off laundries - was a popular idea for long time but seems to have fallen out of favour, not sure why, I think they are handy for comeing in from outside (ours is thru the laundry and then immediately next to it so thats ok) and the laundry sink handy for washing hands if there is not a vanity in the toilet. Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 37Jul 09, 2009 6:36 pm Carmel Hi, off the topic a little.. but I have found a toilet placement fault at my house: the loo is too far from the loo paper. The toilet needs to be just a little closer to the wall. The kids nearly fall off I've seen pictures on real estate websites that really make me Hubby and I once treated ourselves to a couple of nights in a really nice hotel and the first time I reached for what I needed I found . . . a phone! The toilet paper was over near the bath. I also hate ensuites where the towel hangs too close to the wc. Many years ago I visited a display home where the only towel rail was above the cistern! Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 38Jul 09, 2009 7:12 pm Yukky. I wouldn't want to use a towel that lived too close to the cistern. Dirty by association. Or a phone who would you want to talk to? And would they appreciate the call? Re: The placement of the toilet.... modern design fault?? 39Jul 09, 2009 7:27 pm When you finally decide where to put it, make sure, if you purchase a toiled that is filled in back to the wall, that the floor drain is placed so the water doesn't accumulate on one side of the toilet. When they tell you the shower screens don't leak, it's a lie. All the the design flaws become apparent when it is too late.
