Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 25, 2009 11:10 pm hi, new to this and looking for information. i own and live in a house in the blue mountains in nsw and my brother who is on a disability pension is living with me. my three bedroom house currently has a studio which he is using as a bedroom but this is not working as he has to come up to the house to use the bathroom and kitchen facilities. the studio is seperate to the house. my mum has offered to pay for the building of a granny flat at the back of the house. currently there is a structure at the back of the house almost touching the house but not completely attached which was the old laundry (we now have an internal laundry). i would like to build an extra two rooms from the old laundry (living/kitchenette and bedroom) and convert the old laundry into a bathroom. this would serve as living quarters for my brother giving him the independence he wants yet still with some level of care from me. i would still want to keep the studio as this would serve as a rec room and extra guest space when mum comes to visit. would i be able to keep the studio if i build the granny flat (or this may be considered an extention). i don't want to build the flat from the existing studio. i am seeking building advice and of course would come down to council approval but if anyone has any experience with this type of building, any information would be most helpful. thanks, gill Re: i want to build a granny flat and keep the existing studio 2Jun 26, 2009 9:13 am Have you talked to the council about if granny flats are allowed? If they are allowed then there are size requirements that have to be complied with. I would say that either way it would most likely be approved if the correct information is submitted. If granny flats aren't allowed then you could put the application through as an extension with a "wet bar". If you need someone to do the application for you my Town Planning firm can do it all for about half what other places would charge. http://www.rtplanning.tk I would suggest you simply go and talk to council about your proposal, most councils are getting onboard with ancillary dwellings.
