Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 28, 2009 1:59 pm Hi, Can anyone help me with the 'style' of this house? It was built in the 50's. I mean is it art deco or something? I have no idea about design, but want to research how to renovate it in keeping with the style. This is my first attemp at photos, so I hope it works! Re: Design of this 50's house? 2Jun 28, 2009 2:46 pm Art deco spans the 1920s and 30s and into the 40s....some design features may have hung on into the 1950s, but your house doesn't really seem have the art deco look to it. Those etched mirrors were very popular in the 50s - I remember my grandparents having one in their house, which was built in that decade, and a couple of my childhood neighbours had them over the mantelpiece too. Their homes would have been built in the late 1950s. Swans and sailing ships seemed to be fashionable as far as designs went... The brick hearth and timber mantel are nice touches - my in-laws' house, built in 1960, had a similar fireplace. I don't know that the style has a name, but it's a nice house. Maybe your local library might have some books on residential building styles of the 20th century? Keep in mind that there are variations from state to state too, so check what was the go in your particular area. Re: Design of this 50's house? 3Jun 28, 2009 5:46 pm There was a style of housing post war known as Austerity style which are usually simple understated look built in late 40's and 50s. Cant see the first photo really well and I am not an expert on house styles but quite possibly your house would fit into this category. Looks an attractive well kept house to me Re: Design of this 50's house? 4Jun 28, 2009 6:24 pm Quote: Looks an attractive well kept house to me I really wish it had been well kept. Unfortunately is had been very neglected, but we wouldn't have been able to afford it if not! We are thinking of extending and redoing the roof. A dark tin roof with darkish textured render. Keeping the wondows, door and colums light. We've drawn up some plans and I'd lobe to get opinions on it, but not sure how to draw one into a file I can upload. I think I read somewhere reno's can cost $2000 to $5000 per m2, is that right? The last house we renovated took 10 years and we have no idea how much we spent! Once you know the basics, the rest is easy.
