Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 19, 2009 10:44 pm Hi Everyone Just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced same. A friend of mine built her house in Perth WA. I am not going to name builder. She arrived home one afternoon after being out with her family and found that her ceiling had pretty much fallen to the ground. There was no water damage which rules out a burst pipe. The builders have tried to blame it on the ducted airconditioning saying that a pressure buildup could blow out the ceiling. She has spoken to air conditioning specialists who have been in business over 20 years and no-one has ever heard of this. Anyone have anything else to offer? ? Thankfully no-one was hurt - her husband was going to stay home and she dragged him out the house that day. I only know of one other person who has had this happen, but their house is decades old. Is the builder trying to avoid taking the blame and fixing it? I have never heard of that ever in a new home and the air pressure thing? Come on now. Storms will create more airpressure problems than an air con. Even then is it really an issue? I think it is a cop out. Re: Ceiling Fell Down months after moving in! 9Jun 20, 2009 1:12 am a big cop out indeed Fu! They were obviously concerned that it was their fault at first, as they had ppl there very early that morning to assess the damage and initially said they would repair all damage. They fixed the ceiling and were going to fix the floor until they found out the cost. Their cleanup was * and they repainted the damaged walls a different colour and brand of paint my friend used. They have recently told her they have decided that they are not liable for anything more. After promises that they would do everything required to return her house to the new condition. She has scratches etched into her wood flooring and plaster that just wont wash away. They have repaired the walls etc so badly that she is at the stage she would rather them not return because they just don't care about the floors etc when they are working in the house. I really dont want to name the company. As far as I know they own 2 different building companies... Re: Ceiling Fell Down months after moving in! 10Jun 20, 2009 1:40 am and you had better not mention them for your sake. Re: Ceiling Fell Down months after moving in! 12Jun 22, 2009 1:18 pm Well this is Western Australia. Judging by many of the past posts and photos we've seen of the incredibly ** building practices there I'm not surprised in the least. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Ceiling Fell Down months after moving in! 14Jun 22, 2009 2:43 pm I was a little taken back by your comment also Dale, but maybe you have only seen the posts about bad builds and this has given you a general impression. We are up to our 3rd buil now(all good builds) I would have to say I would be very suprised if this sort of thing happened......it would certainly not be expected. I am sure there are as many "**" building practices in every state. I would have to say actually I have never heard of this for any new home anywhere. Re: Ceiling Fell Down months after moving in! 15Jun 22, 2009 2:44 pm wow I feel so bad for your friend. I hate how builders put people in these positions.. surely it would be much better for their reputation, sales etc in the long run if they just took responsibility for whatever mistakes were made and fixed it properly. I have heard that some adhesives lose performance on treated timber, just a thought if timber battens were used. That is very interesting to hear. Will mention this to my friend. I'm not sure what battens were used. I am sure there are as many "**" building practices in every state. I would have to say actually I have never heard of this for any new home anywhere. You are very lucky. My friend has very good source from both Legal aspect and within the company she has built with and the truth is that this has happened on a number of occasions with this builder. They are not able to tell her more than that. I really think it is all down to how strict the supervisor is for that particular job and what tradies you are given for the job too. Re: Ceiling Fell Down months after moving in! 19Jun 23, 2009 7:02 am Surely this is covered under home warranty insurance, which is valid for 6 years after completion??? There is something seriously wrong when someone cant name and shame a company that wont take responsibility for a straight forward stuff up like a ceiling falling in. Spineless money grabbing prats. (The company, not the OP ) Poor effort who ever they are. I'd also be interested to hear if the battens are treated. Going from this forum, all the worst horror stories I have heard have actually been from the eastern states, but as gweluphome said, every state would have good and bad builds, or ** workmanship.
