What is the cieling loading? Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: ceiling battens 4Jun 08, 2009 3:21 pm Camelia, you can use top hat batten which is a steel batten. these are 25mm for the ceiling and look like a top hat when viewing the cross section, hence the name. Alternatively, you may use timber at approx 50 x 35, however if you use steel you will have greater chance of finishing with a dead flat ceiling. No need to worry about wind loads and uplift forces as these are for ceiling and not roof. hope this helps you out Adrien Mamet Re: ceiling battens 5Jun 09, 2009 2:29 pm Thanks for your responses. The battens are timber and are supporting the gyprock ceiling only (the roof trusses are noticeably structural timber). However, even for the gyprock, the builder has used what looks like 20mm thick x 65mm wide pine battens. The ceiling sags slightly in the middle (more noticeable when a bulkhead for a wardrobe was installed, and the battens could not support any weight. Is there an australian standard for Re: ceiling battens 9Jun 10, 2009 11:18 am HI Nomad, I'm not sure what trusses are. Basically, It's a colorbond flat roof with around 50cm spacing between it and the gyprock. The beams holding up the colorbond roof look structural (I think it was built before we went metric so the beams are probably 102mm x 50mm (now 90 x 45). The battens don't look very strong to me (20mm x 65mm pine). thanks Re: ceiling battens 10Jun 10, 2009 5:10 pm Is this an existing dwelling that your lining now? It might be the rafters that are sagging rather than the plaster batten itself if its an older dwelling that wasn't designed to take the weight of ceiling load. 20mm depth does sound to light for a plaster batten and doesnt comply with the Australian standards. Re: ceiling battens 11Jun 13, 2009 8:40 pm Hi Nomad, I just had another look at some photos I took and I can see that they are finger-jointed pine battens. In the middle of the room one of them is nailed to a roof batten but the rest are just hanging in there! Definitely do not meet the Aust. Std. Unless the room is for storage then it's non compliant BCA V2 2019 S3 P3.8 You have 2 options 1. The builder deconstructs the section and rebuilds as per plan /… 7 10684 How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5933 |
