Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 06, 2009 12:46 pm Hi My name is karen and was wondering if someone can help me out, we have bought a really old concrete house 70yrs old. it has timber floor boards made out of hard wood and have been covered by carpet, lino we would love to use the floor boards as they are lovely the only problem is that in those days they were butt togther not touge and groove, which over the years they have seperated slightly and some not all have gaps between them. Is there anyway we can fix this without to much expense as the draft that would come up the dampness and creepy crawlys between the floor boards would be no good. I would really appreciate some advise as I don't know what to do. Thanks Karen Re: Floor boards in an old house 2Jun 07, 2009 9:19 am You can fill with wood putty but gaps will come back as wood will expand/contract due to seasons. When gaps come back (and without tongue&groove), I imagine that pieces of putty can fall through. Taking the boards up carefully and relaying them (using clamps) will help but it's a big big job. I doubt that it'll be worth it. Chris Re: Floor boards in an old house 3Jun 07, 2009 5:34 pm Thanks Chris I was kinda hoping you wouldn't say that lol but I thought as much. Thank You so much Karen Re: Floor boards in an old house 4Jun 08, 2009 3:29 pm Karen, as Chris has posted, anthing other than relaying is just cutting corners and will be somewhat temporary. If you are able to get under the hous you could fix villa board to he underside of the floorboards or the floor joists. We have done this in the past with great success. You could also try caulking the gaps with a similar colour gap filler, looks rather unsightly, but fixes the drafts. Another option, is to remove some of the boards, say every 6th board. Cramp the remainder tight and re-fix. The original fixings should give a bit. Replace the boaurd and move down the line. Repeat. Eventually the board will not give any more, and you will have to shape a sliver to insert into the gap. As mentioned these are all corner cutting and by far the best look is re-lay good luck Adrien Mamet Re: Floor boards in an old house 5Jun 11, 2009 1:50 am Thank you so much for your advise I have took it on board Karen To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even.
