Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 04, 2009 2:49 pm Hi, I am building a duplex and the entrance of the duplex is a long hallway. Basically I need some idea's to make the hallway less boring and gross! The left wall is the garage and it is one long wall 5.5m long. As you walk in on the right wall it is an open study with no door, then 2 doors, one for laundry and one bathroom and at the end of the hallway it opens up to an open plan living area with large/long bifold glass doors and windows etc. The architect says it is a large duplex and will look great but im nervous bout the entry. The duplex is going to be 260m2 including garage/alfresco. The entry is obviously not a wow factor which I wanted it to be. It is 1.5m wide 5.5m long. So do any of you have an idea to make the long bare left hand side wall nicer? I'm also thinking of making it less wide and putting the extra floor space in the open living area. My bf said no way as it would make it way to thin and long and the open plan area is big enough already. The open plan area has a kicthen (6m long, 4m wide galley type), dining (5m long, 4m wide), lounge (6m long 4m wide) and the alfresco on the side (6m long 4m wide). Re: Long Hallway at entrance of home.....what should I do? 2Jun 04, 2009 3:01 pm Hey Mandystoj, I think I'm going to have the same problem, so I'm interested in hearing the responses you get! Everybody I have spoken to has simply said pictures, mirrors and lights - none of which have really phased me! I would love to have some sort of cut out in the wall with feature lighting or something, but not too sure how I'd do it! I think I need some inspiration! Good luck!! Nat Yeh I have thought of all those 3 things, and Im not sure which idea is the best or if i should do anything at all? What are the dimensions of your hallway? Re: Long Hallway at entrance of home.....what should I do? 4Jun 04, 2009 3:13 pm Not sure if your hall way is wide enough, but i would make that wall ur feature photo wall...like have diff sized picture frames with all sorts of photos in it...it would suit such a big wall, but not sure if it will have the same effect cos ur hall is only 1.5m wide... sorry..that wasnt much help.... :S Re: Long Hallway at entrance of home.....what should I do? 5Jun 04, 2009 3:16 pm Newbies Not sure if your hall way is wide enough, but i would make that wall ur feature photo wall...like have diff sized picture frames with all sorts of photos in it...it would suit such a big wall, but not sure if it will have the same effect cos ur hall is only 1.5m wide... sorry..that wasnt much help.... :S Nah I wouldn't do that, I dont think it would look good at all. But thanx for the idea! Im worried its not wide enough too to do anything with it! I should prob just leave it. DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: Long Hallway at entrance of home.....what should I do? 6Jun 04, 2009 3:19 pm My cousins house has a really long entrance, and she just has downlights running along it. Looks really nice at night when she turns it on... Goodluck! Re: Long Hallway at entrance of home.....what should I do? 7Jun 04, 2009 4:13 pm What about : A black floor with a broken white line in the middle and lights running up either side. Or A red carpet runner up the middle then paint a crowd and paparazzi on the walls Or I think I better stop now Cheers Cozmo ______________________________ Building a PD Heywood 29 http://fromevetoeternity.blogspot.com/ Re: Long Hallway at entrance of home.....what should I do? 8Jun 04, 2009 4:25 pm Haha that would definately liven things up a bit! Re: Long Hallway at entrance of home.....what should I do? 11Jun 04, 2009 5:47 pm Here are a couple of ideas. These shots are all from the same home. You can have a cut away wall like this. This one has used a combination of wallpaper above and mirror below. I've seen them with stack stone on the bottom bit or only mirror on the bottom bit. You could also run lighting underneath for a really cool effect. http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/2009-02-28_16-01-08_28022009606.jpg http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/2009-02-28_16-00-56_28022009605.jpg Rather than doing something on the wall, you could do something cool and eye catching on the ceiling. Something like this? http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/2009-02-28_16-09-41_28022009619.jpg http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/2009-02-28_16-09-16_28022009618.jpg I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Long Hallway at entrance of home.....what should I do? 12Jun 04, 2009 6:57 pm We will have a fairly long hallway. The entry part will have a bulkhead ceiling and a rectangle of pebbles in the floor tiles. I am also thinking of painting the walls in a brighter colour to the rest of the house to give it some punch. I will also have a hall table with a large mirror above it and probably a few nice canvasas. I like the ones that are 3 canvasas that make up the one picture so you space them apart slightly along the wall. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. When had 3 matching cheap pendants (3m high ceiling), timber floor, exposed brick wall. When the interior person came in they put 3 canvases spaced down the hall. It was only 1m wide, no issues. If i was doing it again sky lights and sensors for the lights. We had switchs on every room and it worked ok but sensor would have been nicer. Re: Long Hallway at entrance of home.....what should I do? 19Jun 05, 2009 11:53 am Well our hallway will be 1.6M wide and 6.4M long but about half way up on the left there will be double doors to a study/orrice and then on the left that wall will back onto an activity/kids retreat room which i was thinking of having three full cut outs in and put plantation shutters but i might just get three half cut out in the wall (do i make sense) and put some vases etc in there. Decisions decisions.
