Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 24, 2009 12:33 pm hi all I am planning on having a garage built which will be cut into a sloping site . The end wall will be 50% covered by the cut. Can I use the structural wall as a retaining wall or will i need a seperate retaining wall in concrete sleepers for eg. naturally i would prefer to use the structure as retaining as will be cheaper. Re: using structural wall as retaining wall 2May 24, 2009 12:44 pm Hi I have just had the engineering done for exactly the same thing. My cut was 2m at the back of the garage. The engineer used a simple brick design which basically has two courses of bricks with a cavity in between. The steel starter bars that run from the footings up between the bricks, also has the normal steel reo through the cavity. The cavity is then filled up with concrete. The engineer will design what width footings you need to compensate for overturning, there is a sliding scale, eg for 2m high the width of the footing has to be 1200mm. On the outside you will need an ag drain. Hope this helps. Re: using structural wall as retaining wall 4May 24, 2009 2:40 pm Like Hunts01 our whole back wall or our house (20mt) is a retaining wall also. Brick, cavity with reo, brick, & filled with concrete, our footing is wide as. You will need engineering specs for it, and our inspector wanted to see the reo was all tied in and at correct spacing before the inside brick was done. Oh and behind the wall is filled with drainage pipe & scoria, was tanked with black bitumen - totally waterproof. Our great wall is also the garage wall. Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 5197 Assuming you've modelled the TB8, TB10, TB12, TB2 & J1 joists/LVLs there, it appears as per drawing to me. There maybe should be an additional J1 between TB10 and T12 if… 3 31839 |
