Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 19, 2009 10:56 pm Ok.... So due to space restrictions (we're renovating) we have opted for a "laundry in a cupboard" Slightly different from a normal set up I would imagine and the reason we have chosen to go down this path is the 'laundry' would only be 1200mm wide - not a practical size. So I'll have a seperate walk in linen closet (roughly 1200 x 1800) and a 'laundry in a cupboard' Ok... so the 'cupboard' will be 1200 deep and around 1700 wide. I planned to set it up like a proper laundry, with the w/m and dryer on the floor next to each other with a bench running across the top - and a laundry sink & cupboard on the end. A have a couple of dilemas... 1) Should I put overhead cupboards in above the bench, or just put up shelves? Just having shelves seems messy, but since the whole lot will be in a cupboard anyway, does it really matter? 2) what type of doors should I put up? The cupboard will be in our hallway (not a high traffic area, it just leads to the master bedroom), so I want to be able to have the doors open, set up the ironing board and still be able to walk down the hallway. I guess my options are limited to folding or sliding doors. This is a pic from a quote I got for putting in proper over heads etc Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Laundry in a cupboard - help.... 2May 19, 2009 11:43 pm I have a friend who has a laundry cupboard like this. She left the top bits as open shelves, so it's easier to grab stuff when you want it. For doors she has used a set of bifolds, which allow the doors to be open but not take up too much space. She loves hers. Judie Re: Laundry in a cupboard - help.... 3May 19, 2009 11:50 pm When we lived in Perth, we had an apartment with a similar style laundry (ours was in the bathroom). It was shut off via an 'accordian door' not sure if that is the right description. There was a laundry trough (with cupboard underneath) to the left, then washing machine and above washing machine was the tumble dryer. There was space for our laundry basket and a shelf, hmmm, about a metre and a half long?? Sorry my memory is fuzzy, that was over 5 years ago now. I like your drawing, you could have two over head cupboards and maybe two shelves? Myself, I prefer cupboards as I like everything put away, but if you're having doors on the actual 'room' iykwim? Shelves would probably be quite handy House has been complete since Feb 2010 Moved in April 2010 Outside completed August 2010 Currently working on the inside, painting, blinds, furniture http://ourhouseinperth.blogspot.com/ Re: Laundry in a cupboard - help.... 4May 20, 2009 1:24 pm A friend of mine did an extension last year and lost her laundry to make space for a stairwell. Her's is set up almost identical to your drawing. Difference being her dryer is mounted on the wall above the washer, one shelf and then a set of cupboards. By putting the dryer on the wall she was able to have space for brooms, vac, mops etc. They also have bi-folding doors, she said this was good as she was able to open one a little bit when the dryer is on as they couldn't vent it to outside. Just having shelves seems messy, but since the whole lot will be in a cupboard anyway, does it really matter? There u said it ... In my opnion shelves can be quiet handy and u will have the doors anyway. Also sliding doors will be a good idea but really depends on the plan and the area available. Land Settled 27/04/09. We will also be having a laundry like this in the units we are building. I think having the dryer wallmounted like house-to-be said would be a good idea so you can keep brooms, vacuum cleaner in there also, this is what we did in our last house. I don't think I would have doors on the top cupboards, you would then have to open 2 doors to get to things. We had bifold doors, so 4 panels in total that opened in the middle out to each side IYKWIM. Even though we had 4 panels I usually only had 2 open at a time, as you don't always need to get to everything in the laundry, so rather than having 2 big doors, I think 4 bifold doors are great. Re: Laundry in a cupboard - help.... 7May 20, 2009 4:06 pm Thanks everyone Yeah, I think just shelves will be ok. A waste of money really to have proper over head cupboards. As for putting the dryer on top of the washing machine.... I'm not sure about that. I guess I could wall mount the dryer but then it might be too high? I want to keep as much 'bench space' as possible, so figured having them side by side would be ok. There will be a space of approx 600mm between the doors and the w/m dryer etc, so I could always have a spot for hanging brooms etc on the wall just inside the door? I also have the walk-in linen closet very close to the laundry cupboard, and had planned to have a space for brooms etc in there. Hopefully when I get home tonight the hallway and laundry cupboard will be all framed up so I can show what the area is actually like. Re: Laundry in a cupboard - help.... 8May 20, 2009 5:44 pm I'd do the appliances side by side rather than stacked. The added benchspace doing it that way is a big bonus. Even though we are building a house with a full laundry, we've elected to do the full bench and have both appliances underneath as the benchspace is so handy. Gives you somewhere to keep your laundry baskets as well. I'd also just keep the overheads as shelves, there'll be doors for the whole area to hide the mess. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. The only issue I can see is the requirements to have a guide runner at the bottom of the doorway.... Do you think that will be an issue?
