Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 14, 2009 3:49 pm Hi, I am new to Perth so i am not sure the strutural issues involving retaining walls. Therefore, you will notice alot of my posts are questions and queries. I have had a few builders look at my contour survey they all said that i would need retaining walls and quoted everything from 9,000 to 12,000. However, the builder that i eventually signed up with said that i just needed to use the Panel and Post option and it should only cost 5,000. I have a 1.2m drop diagonally across my land. It was suggested i use one end to fill the other and use retaining walls. Not that I am complaining, but it seems like such a large discrepancy. I haven't spoken to their person-in-charge yet. But I shall assume for the moment that it is the engineer's suggestion. I just checked and Panel and Post just seems to be thin retaining walls. Is that structually sound or just a cheap alternative? I don't want my house to start developing cracks after a few years and end up with even costlier repairs in the future. I had an architect friend take a look and he said that we needed retaining walls but suggested lowering the footings of the house and leave the contours to save cost. Has anyone used Panel and Post retaining walls structurally? I guess i just want to find out if they are good enough and if anyone has used them for sometime with no issues to the walls or their home. Re: Question on Retaining walls 2May 18, 2009 8:55 pm You could do these your self to save costs. Where are the retaining walls in relation to your house, I have them on two sides of a garage and are using a brick retaining wall, outer skin, infill concrete and steel reinforcement as normal and an internal wall, basically double brick. All you pay for, is the bricklayer, person to set the steel (steel material) and brick up the other side. You can then fill it in yourself. Good luck, if this suits your situation, if not hire a post digger, did some holes, place some c channels and do a post and beam retaining wall. Cheers Render your bathroom walls, two opinions versus the one, makes you wonder. 3 4192 The spacing of the studs looks pretty large especially for a load bearing wall. 3 8184 Nope, only on the inside, I've literally has my ears to the brick outside and can't hear anything. I can sort of 'reset' the noise by pressing firmly on the studs. This… 10 5026 |
