Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 14, 2009 12:55 pm To all those home builders out there storing things temporarily whilst building either at a friends, family or storage facillity, I thought I would warn you of our situation. Unfortunately when we moved into our rental we relocated about $20000 worth of furniture clothes etc to my parents house thinking we would be covered under our insurance policy as it was within australia. Unfortunately the bushfires came through and wiped out my parents house and all our stuff with it. AAMI have taken the stance that we were not covered as we were not temporarily living there at the time of the incident (thank god is all I can say as we would not now be here) - after taking it under review they got back to us three months yes three months later to say it wasn't accepted - this only after chasing them up. Lesson learnt - I am now in the process of changing my insurance providers for everything - but there are other insurance policies out there including their parent company that do insure goods temporarily at a location in Australia. Make sure you read the fine print of any of your policies because that is what was thrown back at me in a letter I received today - it is up to you to make sure you are aware of your insurance policy. Please pass this to anyone you know in this situation because I would think it was quite common! How come your things weren't covered under your parent's insurance seeing as they were at their house? Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Beware AAMI Insurance Issues 3May 14, 2009 1:16 pm My parents were some on the lucky ones - they lost everything including their cars - had to run for their lives as by the time the fire was on them the cars were gone - very scary, like alot of people they were insured but not enough. I would never consider taking money for our stupidity from them in a situation like this they have had to replace everything ,at least we have what we have and we have them. I would like to say more about how we were treated but I wanted to remain with the facts, but I will always double check my insurances in the future! My sister in law is having similar problems with her insurer after the fire. Sorry about your misfortune Re: Beware AAMI Insurance Issues 5May 14, 2009 3:22 pm As sad a situation it is - AAMI is not playing a game. It would be quite plainly written in their PDS. At the end of the day they hand the customer the document and the onus is on you to read it and make an informed decision. It would be the same as if the goods were stored in a storage shed. Some companies won't cover you for this. Maybe they took so long for the final answer because of the fire situation and was trying to see if they were able to assist in some way? Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Beware AAMI Insurance Issues 6May 14, 2009 4:07 pm Thanks Stu, I am sorry about your sister but I have heard a lot of insurance issues with fire victims and my heart goes out to them having to deal with issues as well as the horrendous nightmare that they had to go through. It is easy to forget the insanity of the situation to me it seems like it was a long time ago already but to people who have lived through it it is a daily nightmare that will take a long time to come to terms with. Kyton, I have acknowledged that I am stupid that I should have read more thoroughly and asked more questions - unfortunately many of us get insurance without looking too deeply - Many of us on this board I suspect would be living in a rental with stuff stored in other locations whilst they build and AAMI would not cover them. The letter states"I understand that you believe AAMI did not provide you with appropriate advice in regard to coverage of your contents outside your home, however, I accept the onus rest with you, the policyholder, to determine if you have taken out an appropriate polilcy that is suitable for your requirements" On the matter of timeliness there are industry set times - I requested information on a number of occasions and I cannot see how if it was that cut and dried that it could should have taken so long, I would have preferred a letter stating their position in the appropriate timeframe. When I was finally told I was told by phone that it woul not be accepted and I requested it be in writing as I requested originally it took two more weeks and more emails and a letter to the ombudsman for me to finally get that letter. I would prefer to keep it factual and not bombard with feelings my intent is to bring this matter to anyone who is in a similar situation to be aware and read their policy documents closely - I wish I had - and as you point out a shed is not covered in many insurance companies either so if you are in this position please look closely. (which is to be expected from any insurance company given the circumstances). I wouldn't be happy if I wasn't covered, but I don't think the blame can be put on to AAMI. I will have a closer look over my insurance policies. Thanks for the heads up. P.S I don't mean to sound like a prick. However, my policy was obviously not suitable for me in my current situation - one I will be fixing. Unfortunately all too often this is the case and in this forum many people are in small rentals etc and may think they are covered but they are not. This I believe is very important for people to know and look into prior to being in a situation like mine, and that in a nutshell is why I have made the effort to let others know - Any insurance company could do the same I just happen to know after looking into it that there are other insurance companies that do have a blanket temporily removed goods within Australia and there are no conditions attached. They did take an extreme amount of time for whatever the reason - I don't really know as they haven't told me other than they noted my dissatisfaction and would use for trg purposes. (from AAMI ombudsman dept) Thanks Yvette , I do know about the Ombudsman AAMI have an internal one aswell! The way I see it lisahello was doing us a favour by saying 'learn from my mistake'. I don't feel she is badmouthing AAMI, although perhaps company names weren't necessary.
