Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 14, 2009 10:08 am Just a quick one guys We have one of those big return air vents (rectangle grate thing) installed the other day. Now the thing is, it has been installed in the ceiling of an area upstairs. On the plan I am sure it has it located on a wall next to the upstairs linen, so I'm not sure if it is supposed to be there or not I actually don't mind where it is now (it is out of the way and not right in your face on a wall), but I'm not sure if it can work properly being on the ceiling as I have never seen one there before. I wasn't sure if it had something to do with us having refridgerated cooling rather than evap? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Return Air Vent 2May 14, 2009 10:44 am Our is installed downstairs in the centre of the house.... I have ducted refridgerated too ??? Re: Return Air Vent 6May 14, 2009 11:07 am In our rental, ours was installed on an upstairs ceiling. Out of the way. Worked beautifully, no probs. The only issue is that you have to climb onto a chair or ladder to get the filter down to vacuum. As I said I don't mind where it is, I like that it is out of the way but I just wanted to make sure it would work ok My karma ran over your dogma Re: Return Air Vent 10May 14, 2009 11:18 am My Parents unit (where we are staying) is about 4 years old and they have it installed in the ceiling. They have both heating and ref air con through the same system. It's right in the middle of the unit in the study nook near the family room and is very noisy! It's a custom designed unit, so I'm not sure of they made allowances for the intake duct through the wall/void...but then again, space is seriously lacking here anyway!!! Ours will be in the hallway near the garage entry door on the ground floor. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! All the ones I've seen here in Canberra have been inserted in the walls. I agree with Southies; I think your only issue will be access for cleaning (maybe twice a year) however this is offset by not having the d@mn thing at eye level. It would make sense to have it in the ceiling though as there is rarely a convenient wall space I reckon... ours is in the back passage, but it means we have to leave the hallway door slightly open when we have the heating on so that the air can circulate, otherwise there is a sucking noise! Nothing worse than a sucking noise in your back passage!! Re: Return Air Vent 16May 14, 2009 3:11 pm donuts I've only ever seen them in walls too! Ok, this is very interesting. My vent will also be in my back passage. We are having zoned heating, I don't want to have to have the door open to the back passage, when that zone is off. Defeats the purpose of zoned heating. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Return Air Vent 17May 14, 2009 3:48 pm Ok now it is getting to easy!!! My vent is also in my back passage and my wife thinks the door shoud be closed all the time Re: Return Air Vent 18May 14, 2009 5:09 pm mattwalker Ok now it is getting to easy!!! My vent is also in my back passage and my wife thinks the door shoud be closed all the time I think your wife speaks for ALL wives, Matt. Jo, we were aware that airflow is an issue with ducted systems, which is why my other half wasn't keen for us to put a door on the hallway. Me, I'd sooner put up with a sucking noise than my middle son's constant doompa-doompa from his bass-playing. Re: Return Air Vent 20May 14, 2009 5:40 pm Joles, we are having 2 return air grilles, one at each end of the house, so we can close off the kids area of the house (apparently!). They are both in the ceiling. Sonya How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5933 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
