Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 14, 2009 8:08 am I have seen the Pig-In-Mud type panels that you can put into your door opening, and they look great, but I am looking for a more permanent solution as I still want to be able to slide the door open for access. I am thinking if a glazier can maybe cut the existing glass panel to accommodate a dog flap? That may be hard as it is double glazed. Another option is to have the whole glass panel replaced with a new custom sheet that has the dog flap fitted? I would be very interested to hear if anyone has had it done, and if so, what the costs were and if you were in Melbourne - who did it for you? Thanks. Re: Dog door fitted into a sliding patio door? 2May 14, 2009 8:45 am back years ago when we inquired we were told that the glass couldn't have a flap inserted without modifying the existing glass panel. and adding in a central support strut. ( basically remaking the door) Not sure if this is still the case though. You can get one put in a window glass pane but not in a sliding glass door. Well that's the way it USED to be. Re: Dog door fitted into a sliding patio door? 3May 14, 2009 9:27 am This is possible but you can't modify the existing glass as it cannot be cut. The door/modification would be very expensive. A cheaper solution would be to install a separate dog door/flap in the wall next to the door. I was thinking of just a replacement sheet of glass, pre-cut to accept a dog flap if I supply the flap to the gazers prior to them re-glazing the frame. Unfortunately, there is no wall left to put a door into the wall. I'll call some glazers today and see what I can find out. Cheers. Re: Dog door fitted into a sliding patio door? 5May 14, 2009 10:04 am i was told going to cost about $500 possibility more to replace the glass then u have to get the dog door on top of that! (for us we have one long window in our sliding doors not just the square section like some ppl do!) When i spoke to a pets direct store who has those ones that fit in and out, they made a good point, if you leave, you can take it with you, so its one charge once! We aren't planning to go anywhere anytime soon, i guess things could change in the future! So for us, we are going to get the tempt dog, its about $350 for the size we want but its a one off charge, and does the job! Re: Dog door fitted into a sliding patio door? 6May 14, 2009 10:06 am Just spoke to a nice chap at glaziers.com - he said they would have no problem fitting a flap into a new sheet of 6mm toughened glass if I could supply them the flap to start with. He reckons about $800. I know it's a lot more than the slide in after market flaps, but I don;t mind paying for something that's pre useable. So, I just need to find a dog flap that's big enough for a Great Dane, but can be installed into glass - and go from there. I know what you mean about being able to take the temporary one with you, but the problem is our door is only about 750 wide. If we use the temporary one, there would not be enough room to get out past it when required, and it would be a right faff on removing the panel each time you want to get out of the door. Although, we do have a Great Dane, so I could probably just exit through the flap! Cheers. Re: Dog door fitted into a sliding patio door? 7May 14, 2009 11:36 am Before you get the door panel reglazed, make sure that it will still slide past with the doggy door installed. There are not many pre-made doors available that fir Great Danes, lat alone ones that are suitable for glass mounting. I have found one, but I am trying to contact the manufacturer to get a frame thickness so I can check it will slide past. Cheers for the reminder though. Re: Dog door fitted into a sliding patio door? 9May 14, 2009 1:11 pm We had a dog door installed into the glass for our two labradors - you can easily fit your self through it! it was $500 all up there is a guy who does it all. I would not recommend this though as the plastic frame can bust or the glass around it - very easy to do sorry to say and you only have a year of warranty - we had to get it replaced once and I noticed cracks when we sold - the option we are going for this time is to get the sliding security door fitted with a lockable dog door - the other option we had thought about is you can get an insertable door into the sliding frame that locks into place. This is the costly part. Fortunately I was aware of this before we started building and asked them to change the sliding laundry door to a flush wooden door to save the trouble (and expense) of fitting one later. Good luck!! I didn't think there was anyone else here who has a normal sized dog. http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u240/strumer/017.jpg Just be aware, from a security perspective, that anything a Dane can fit through a human can as well...and even though they have a big bark I wouldn't rate them as the most aggressive guard dogs - I think if someone broke into our house Loki would try to hide under the couch. Cheers, Earl Re: Dog door fitted into a sliding patio door? 13May 15, 2009 1:03 pm Hi Strummer - yes we do. Small world, we're 'Tony & Emma' from the Dane thread on DOL, seen lots of pics of Loki on there. We have a 5 month old Merle male called Huckleberry. Tons of pics of him, and the house build, on here:- www.mytb.org/tony---emma Security shouldn't be too much of an issue, The patio doors are to to the laundry which is 'Tee' shaped. The patio door is on the bottom of the Tee and then on the two 'ends' are two doors into the house. I intend to put bolts on the house side of those two doors, so once he's in the laundry we can lock him in from the outside (from inside the house) - that way, if anyone gets past him and into the laundry they can't get further into the house. That's the plan anyway. Re: Dog door fitted into a sliding patio door? 14May 15, 2009 4:30 pm I agree to fit the doggy door into a solid panel of the door and not into the glass.
In glass is not easy, easecially into double glazing - a retrofit without compormising the unit is not possible. To put a standard dog door into a double glazing unit is counter productive anyways as the created air leak will reduce the insulation value provided by the unit. Most wall type solutions have double doors, meaning they create an air gap for insulation. It really comes down to the quality of the door system itself. In regard to burglar resistance and security I can only advise to look at the individual product. An article from America that I saw recently showed that many of tthe doors create an easy access path for burglar, not just because they coudl climb through but also because they can reach handles and key with the right devices. Best regards Kris

Had to get the biggest size possible - to accomodate what is currently a 30kg puppy.. but will 1 day be a 60-70kg Dogue De Bordeaux! (Hooooge!) Really happy with the insert.. we were worried from a security perspective about having such a large entry point into our house. Were originally looking at security doors etc.. but every door company we talked to said it voided the concept of it being a security door if there was such a big hole in it. Figured.. why bother.. may as well get the temporary one we can remove if needs be anyway. So we put the insert into the sliding fly screen (we have the doors thats 2 that pull in from the side and meet in the middle - forget the technical name) .. and we can then shut the glass on the inside.. and still lock it. Works a treat !
