Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Where is your man-hole (person hole)? 41May 10, 2009 3:37 pm Yes but once you get in to the roof how are they going to get in to the rest of the house? Break a hole in the ceiling? I would think it better the man hole be in the garage for the security reason. I was in court once (for a class) and two guys where charged with breaking in to someone's house, they had climbed onto the roof and removed some roof tiles, they then gained access to the house through the manhole. It seemed like an awful lot of effort for a VCR (which is what the cops caught them with). My manhole is going to be in the back hallway, and we are thinking of getting one of those ladder things installed and storing the chrissie decorations and christmas tree up there. If they take some roof tiles off and then get down into the manhole and then find themselves in the garage, it would be very funny for them... as they would then have another locked door to try and get into the house. Exactly, I agree 100%. Doghouse, weird about M saying no to move it to the garage. When we were with them, they changed ours to the garage. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. This is another security thing I don't understand. Everyone keeps saying colorbond is more secure. Can't you just unscrew a sheet and then drop yourself down into the roof? You could but there are probably easier ways to get into a house than doing that - like through a sliding door. We didn't consider Colorbond to keep people out of our roof. Keeping possums out was a factor in our decision though, and luckily for us those critters don't have any steel-cutting tools Re: Where is your man-hole (person hole)? 47May 10, 2009 4:40 pm Purpleninja, can possums get in thru roof tiles; do they lift them up and get into the ceiling?? Possums used to get into the ceiling of my parents old house; I always wondered how they did it Re: Where is your man-hole (person hole)? 48May 10, 2009 4:45 pm It's easier for tiles to break than for the steel in a Colorbond roof to. Also some types of possums are strong enough to pull up a loose tile. Re: Where is your man-hole (person hole)? 50May 10, 2009 7:21 pm joles I'm hoping someone can confirm or deny this. I've noticed quite a few people talking about storing things up through their manhole, especially in the garage with those drop down ladder thingys. I was also considering doing this. BUT I was told that if you store things in your roof and a truss fails, the truss company and the builder may not take any responsibility because the trusses were not engineered to take the extra load. (Even though that extra load may be very, very minimal.) By storing things up there, you may be effectively voiding the warranty. IS THIS TRUE??? (I have also noticed that if you add evap or air con etc, it always notes an upgrade of the trusses where it will be placed.... so it's kind of sounding like it might be true to me. ) I know of 2 cases where people have stored things in their roof while having down lights. The lights have heated up, and consequently paper has caught on fire. The houses burnt down! I would NEVER store things in my roof cavity. Re: Where is your man-hole (person hole)? 53May 10, 2009 9:26 pm Like WBA, our manhole is located next to the gas heater unit in the roof. It will be in the ensuite and no one will see it there. I had a good laugh at the chippies when they marked the position on the frame for the manhole.... I also wanted to install a manhole with a pull down ladder in the garage for some extra storage space. Might have to think twice about it now! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I didn't like seeing the noisy, swearing tradies in my house when it was being built for the same reason.. I like the idea of my house being clean, virginal and pure because we were the first occupiers, but I wonder what obscenities have been spoken in my kids rooms.... Silly huh.. Re: Where is your man-hole (person hole)? 55May 10, 2009 11:45 pm Ours is in Bedroom 2... We thought about changing it but it is right near the heating in the roof and therefore practical if there is a problem and serioudly I didn't even have any idea where it was until I really looked at the plans wondering where it was one day... not even in the display home did I notice it! 2nd build here we come in Whittlesea! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=92617 1st Build - Henley - Cooper in Doreen! Was not happy about that. If we could get it in the garage we could have put a lock on the internal door so if some one was to break in they couldn't enter the house. But not to be.
