Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 08, 2009 8:44 pm My reliable, nearly 10 year old Whirlpool front loader gave up the ghost yesterday and I began the arduous (and confusing) task of looking for a replacement. I left home intending to buy a similar model to my old one as I have been very happy with it, to find that they are now made in China (mine was made in Italy) as are most of them and made the mistake of asking which machines are made in Europe! So I left Harvey Norman (and yes I do know that they apparently have a large share in Ariston!) convinced that I need to spend almost twice as much as I intended - but determined to do some research (which is how I now know about the HN share in the company). I have just read some terrible reviews on another site - but I imagine that you are more likely to complete an online review if you have had a bad experience. So now I am torn between spending about $800 on an equivalent Whirlpool (apart from the fact that they are now Asian manufactured which I am not keen on and I imagine does compromise quality) and spending $1400 on a European brand. Any personal experiences or anecdotes would be appreciated. Re: Any thoughts on Ariston Front Loaders? 2May 08, 2009 11:30 pm I bought a 7.5kg Whirlpool 1273AW about 18mths ago for $780 (RRP 1049 or 1149) - minus NSW Govt rebate of $150. Works a treat - good thorough wash, gentle if required, no problem at all. Just a bit slow - 2:10 - on the heavy "Cotton" wash (other programs only up to 4kg). You can always use the delay start. Personally I don't think it's worth it to pay double the price. Whirlpool is a good brand with good service (on their fridge accessories though ) Re: Any thoughts on Ariston Front Loaders? 3May 08, 2009 11:37 pm Welcome, total beginner. You might consider going to the top of the forum pages and using the 'Search' option under 'Discussion Tools', searching for Ariston. You'll find Ariston has been the subject of discussion on this forum, too. Good luck - and don't forget choice.com.au! Re: Any thoughts on Ariston Front Loaders? 4May 10, 2009 8:03 pm We got talked into an Ariston at Harvey Norman also. You didn't happen to go to the Hoppers Crossing store and talk to a bloke by the name of Kevin did you? We ended up paying $800 delivered for a 7kg Ariston front loader. After reading some reviews on the web we decided to get the extended warranty as well. No problems so far, but it's early days. Ariston is actually a pretty well known brand in Italy. If you were planning on spending $1400 though I would go for a Bosch. Re: Any thoughts on Ariston Front Loaders? 5May 10, 2009 9:59 pm we had one lasted 2 years before the bearers went it also went mouldy around the door rubber apparently because of the steam build up you have to leave the door open after each wash.so we just got an lg fuzzy logic machine and i love it normal wash cycle 38 mins its a top loader. keep in mind if you are buying for bowl size to get bigger wash then 4-6 kilo machines have same size bowls and the 6.5-8.5 machines have same size bowls also all parts other then bowl are the same part numbers. so dont pay more for a bigger machine its only the outside cover thats bigger stay safe happy building Re: Any thoughts on Ariston Front Loaders? 6May 11, 2009 1:54 pm Well I am now a total expert on all things washing machine related!! Ended up buying a Bosch - only $790 for a 6.5k machine from Good Guys (not sure whether they are just an SA retailer but had the best price and believe me, I shopped around!). Interesting the hear about the drum sizes so we were tossing up whether to fork out an extra $300 to get the 7k machine but the salesman basically said it was not worth it - which was very nice of him! Ended up reading and hearding terrible things about Ariston, plus was totally put off once I found out about the connection between them and HN! Was toying with the idea of an ASKO but they start at about $1700 so even if my Bosch only last half as long as an ASKO, I'll still be ahead!! Bosch are made in Thailand in their own factory but apparently use German made components and generaly consensus was that they are the next best thing if you are not going to go European (ie Miele or ASKO etc). Have done 2 loads so far - including one with the delayed start which was very exciting! I will have to remember to wipe down the rubber around the drum to prevent mould which I did neglect to do with my old machine and I have to admit it did start to smell!!
