Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Telstra Line Connection 21May 14, 2009 3:41 pm Could you just use a trench digger?? Like a 'dingo'? DH & I used one on our last property to lay water pipe. It was alot of fun to use. Neither of us are that mechanically minded but worked a treat. We thought we may do our own trench for phone and electricity, comments on here have made me much more positive in doing so. Re: Telstra Line Connection 22May 15, 2009 8:38 pm On your own land you are allowed to operate any Excavator you want. The line is drawn by the business you hire it from. The one we hired from allowed us the 1.5 without any license or insurance. We could also have the 4-5 tonne but the costs would increase with float hire and hubby wanted to start small as he had never done it before. We tried a trench digger before the Excavator but it could not handle the clay and got bogged. The machine can come with an Insurance but that is in case you damage the machine or its trailer only. Before start digging you have the responsibility to contact the body (don't know the name, sorry) that registers all cables/pipes in ground. We didn't do it because our land is old farmland and we're all on 2 hectare acreages. Re: Telstra Line Connection 25May 29, 2009 8:31 am Thanks for the info, it will be a while before we need to worry about the phone line but I am trying to gather as much info as possible. Trying to find as many hidden costs as possible before hand. Re: Telstra Line Connection 26May 31, 2009 9:24 pm Just been reading this thread, So is the trench and cables ect paid for by telstra ? then i pay connection fee ? I was told its $299 can anyone confirm this?? Mark Re: Telstra Line Connection 27Jun 03, 2009 2:36 pm Yes the connection fee is $299. Built with Commodore Homes - The Fusion completed April 2009 (with modifications) Yes I have moved! Will update as soon as I can...no internet at home right now!!! Sooty's House - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19462 Re: Telstra Line Connection 28Jun 03, 2009 6:16 pm $299 for connection, and that just includes the telco man connecting the cable (that you or a contractor has run through to the nearest telstra box (concrete box in ground with green plastic lid?)), it doesn't include the trenching itself, but Telstra can give you the phone number to the contractor in your area that you can use. From what I understand $299 is the fee you have to pay if a phone line has never been connected at your place - even if the line is physically connected, but if nobody has held an account at that property then you get to pay the handsome fee for the privilege of getting activated! I guess it's because they have to physically send someone out to check it etc. Actually the electrician doing our place (admin) said that they may not be able to do the phone cable installation for us (something about their contract with Telstra having lapsed). Not sure, see what happens on Friday, worst case scenario is that they just dig the trench and I find who else will lay the cable! Re: Telstra Line Connection 29Jun 03, 2009 7:33 pm If you think you are having fun you should try a rural connection. I took us over 10 mths to eventually get it done. The contractor covered costs for the cable itself & the poles (& their installation) & having the cable bought in from the nearest pit (which was over 500m). That left felling trees & trenching as our costs, plus the connection fee. The initial cabling was not strong enough to be strung between the poles & kept stretching & breaking. The contractor was less than impressed. But our biggest achievement was just getting someone out to look at our topography in relation to the nearest pit, & not having to explain it via goggle earth. We outlasted about 4 different employees during this process. Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Telstra Line Connection 30Jun 04, 2009 11:06 pm We just paid $220 Supply & install conduits with draw wires for telecommunication provisions, we expected this bill so that was okay, but with it we also received an "Optional" Variation 1 x Internal wiring for phone point (please mark position on attached plan) please specify:- - wall mounted phone @1600mm high - or bench top phone with wiring drawn thru lead-in pipes (already installed) complete with termination box mounted on wall behind meter box; $324.50 1 x Supply & install digital ready Clipsal antenna as per brochure. $305.00 does anyone think these prices are reasonable? Re: Telstra Line Connection 31Jun 05, 2009 9:03 am Hammerhead If you think you are having fun you should try a rural connection. I here you on this. We are just in the process of siging the contract on a rural block, the power alone will cost as around $50000 , we know that there is a telstra cable running across the front but unsure where the pit is. If we had good signal I would forget the phone line and just go wireless internet and VOIP. Oh the joys of life and living on the land Re: Telstra Line Connection 32Jun 05, 2009 12:43 pm mareetina Hammerhead If you think you are having fun you should try a rural connection. the power alone will cost as around $50000 Oh the joys of life and living on the land $ 5,000 I hope, Mareetina? Re: Telstra Line Connection 33Jun 05, 2009 2:09 pm We have to Annelies $ 5,000 I hope, Mareetina? No, no, $50000 (all 4 0), not a mistake. We have to get the power from the powerline easment that goes over one corner of the land (100 acres). We are up for the cost of the transformer, $27500 and then I think it was something like $7000/100m that you want the power to go. Hence we are trying to position the house as close as possible to the power . We were well aware there would be extra costs for the power but thought it closer to $20000. In saying all this we are still keen to purchase the block , maybe we have rocks in our head But its want we want Re: Telstra Line Connection 34Jun 05, 2009 9:36 pm Good new is that our electrician and plumber (plumber dug the trench) has run the phone line and put phone points to the hosue. Bad news is that the line doesn't seem to be connected in the telstra box on the shed Guess it means a "connection" fee if I have to get the telstra techie out, just to connect two wires together! Grrrrr. Do phone lines have any sort of voltage running down them? I mean is it safe to just connect up wires yourself? It's a thin black wire so I'm thinking......... but maybe what I shouldn't be thinking! 3 48409 Hi all I'm currently building a duplex in Sydney and we need to do a new water connection to the second unit.
