Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 05, 2009 2:59 pm Hello, Need some advice/anecdotes on getting a phone connection to a new block. I just spoke to Telstra and it seems like a multi-step process. They have asked me to contact a 3rd party contractor and then it seems they want me to provide trenching.... shouldn't this all be handled by the one company? Is it really that difficult or am I just over-reacting? Thanks, Re: Telstra Line Connection 4May 05, 2009 3:26 pm You should check with your builder as the trenching etc may have already been done by them. Ask them if they have done the telephone prep work like trenching. Re: Telstra Line Connection 5May 05, 2009 3:49 pm Look for a white conduit coming up through the ground near the meter box. It should also have a strong or cable coming out of it. You should also see a line or string come out of the brick work. Hopefully you will see both things that i hhave decribed. Re: Telstra Line Connection 6May 05, 2009 3:59 pm Unless you specifically requested the builder to do the trench and run the cable, it wont be there and yes, you will need to organise a 3rd party to do it. This contractor installed all the necessary cables, dug the trenches, etc. All that is now left for me to do is contact Telstra upon moving into have the line connected. I believe this is the standard procedure as when I spoke with Telstra before contacting the contractors they explained it to me in the same way. They told me have my contractor do the necessary cabling work, and then call them (Telstra) once I needed it connected. Your builder should be able to provide some information about that. In our case, we have a subcontractor recommened by our builder (Beeman communication) who dig the trench and lay the cable from the boundary to our house. Telstra then connect from the boundary to the exchange box. May be try Optus, heard that their service is much better... ===================== yvette72, I have a colleague at work with the same problem. His house is at the back of another house with a extremely long drive way. Even though he dig the trench by himself, everytime he contacted telstra to connect the line, they send a different technician who had no idea of the situation and always say "can't do it, it's too far away!"....After 5 months, countless times of explanations and phone calls, telstra finally got it connected...what a joke... Re: Telstra Line Connection 10May 06, 2009 6:50 pm it seems in our case the problem is that all the records for the pits are now keep in india so it was hard for them to find the spare line in the pits and has there was a major acreage development up the road and they used all the lines, but it seems we got the last of power lucky for us as the owners have to upgrade the power at there expensive I would not have been paying.I was very annoy that they took the phone points they should be may pay as they are making millions out of it finished building 40 square home on 5 acres with perry homes.working on the landscaping just finished pool deck with ://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2217 Re: Telstra Line Connection 11May 06, 2009 11:44 pm Yeah, length of the driveway is not the problem with Telstra as the distance between the pit and our house site is 170 meters. We called Telstra and they sent us a contractor called Gary. He told us that he was not allowed to trench on the property itself but that if he could trench outside the fence then Telstra payed him to do 64 meters max. Unfortunately our front is 68 meters and therefor we did all the trenching ourselves and on the property. Originally we called Telstra regarding the connection to our newly built shed but Gary told us that Telstra only allows one free connection so we asked him to measure the cable from pit to the house site and to come back when the house was build. When all the trenches were digged we put in the Telstra cable ourselves together with electricity and data cable. The trench ends 8 meters from the proposed house site as the builder provides trenching and cabling up to 10 meters. Is it really that difficult or am I just over-reacting? Thanks, Funnily enough, we are just about ready for connection. We rae about 8 weeks from handover and the site supervisor today told us we can go ahead and arrange Telstra connection as the builder does not provide for trenching. I called Telstra on 180 283 407, who then gave me another number for Victoria, based on our new address in Melbourne SE suburbs of 1800 773 776 (Service Stream). They took details like distance from boundary to phone point on outside of house, and distance of Telstra pit to boundary, (which is shown on our builders drawings). They then gave me a ticket number and said that we would be contacted again in 3 to 5 days. Will let you know what happens next. I forgot to ask Service Stream what the costs were. Tony. Re: Telstra Line Connection 13May 08, 2009 1:54 am I was told by the sales rep. of the company Im with will put the phone line in the same trench as the power cable that goes to the front of the block. I then have to conect it with telstra. Has anyone elles heard of doing it this way. KW......... “It's just as unpleasant to get more than you bargain for as to get less” George Bernard Shaw. Thanks Cheers KW......... “It's just as unpleasant to get more than you bargain for as to get less” George Bernard Shaw. Re: Telstra Line Connection 16May 10, 2009 8:02 am Yes, we did and we closed the trenches already so the cable is sitting under 600mm of dirt. We left 4 meters open and when the house is going to be build the builder's electrician is going to extend that part to the garage of the house. The moment he'll put the electricity in we are going to add the Telstra cable. After that we are going to call Telstra so they can connect the cable to the Phone point somewhere in the house. We don't know where exactly as we just got the contract and Electrical Plan from the builder. cheers Re: Telstra Line Connection 17May 10, 2009 12:58 pm We hope to start on our footings in about a month or so. Do you think it would be a good idea to get the same guys to excavate for these cables in order to save having to call someone else later on? Re: Telstra Line Connection 19May 14, 2009 10:35 am gettingThere We hope to start on our footings in about a month or so. Do you think it would be a good idea to get the same guys to excavate for these cables in order to save having to call someone else later on? Surely a very good idea, GettingThere, as the costs to bring the exavator in are quite high. On the down site rain might cause a lot of problems if you leave the trenches open too long. We had heaps of problems laying the cables as we had to work ourselves through thick layers of soggy clay. Also edges may cave in over time. We did the trenching ourselves by hiring a 1.5 ton Exavator for $250. If you hire it over the weekend you can collect it on Friday around Noon and return it at Monday 9 am. It took hubby a couple of hours to get used to handling the machine but it was a very good deal because most operators charge $85/hour + float for a similar machine. Then it goes up to $99/5 tonne and 115 for 13 tonne. With the 13 tonne comes a hefty charge of 300-400 for the float. We did 200 meters of trenching and also moved a lot of dirt around also as the Escavator came with a nice trailer. Re: Telstra Line Connection 20May 14, 2009 11:39 am Don't you need a license to run those machines?? Also, if something bad happened, say you accidentally break any of yours/neighbour's gas/water pipe, will that be covered by insurance? 3 48409 Hi all I'm currently building a duplex in Sydney and we need to do a new water connection to the second unit.
