Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 04, 2009 6:58 pm Hubby and I found the splashback tiles we are after at a tile place that is not our reccomended supplier and have asked our builder if we can supply them ourselves. They said it was against company policy! - the supplier they want us to go through does not have the tiles we are after and the closest match is $300/m more expensive! ! - we cant do it ourselves after handover as it needs to be done to get the certificate of occupancy. how do i go about doing this? is it common for the builder to refuse this type of request or are they being unreasonable? They have big contracts with suppliers so it is not in their best interests to let customers use other suppliers. Think of it from the suppliers perspective, they supply at a lower cost to the builder in return for all the builder's work.... but then they find out the builder is letting customers go to another supplier. It's not ideal, but it is the compromise we make if we are building with a volume builder. You have a couple of options: suck it up and use a tile from their supplier. pick a cheap category 1 tile from their supplier and get it ripped out and retiled in your chosen tile after handover. OR pick a category 1 tile and see if you can grab your tiler on site and get him to forget the selected tile and install your tile instead for a couple of slabs. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I completely deleted the kitchen splashback tiling because I am having a glass splashback installed. They were able to do that, but if it's in the bathroom I suppose that's not possible. As I posted, I deleted all splashback tiling from the kitchen with no problem. But I'm in WA so possibly different rules for you.
