Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 01, 2009 11:27 pm Hey guys! I'm looking around for established homes and most of the electricity are from overhead powerlines on an electrical post outside the house. I'm just wondeirng, is there a possibility to get the overhead powerlines to run underground, just for my house? I just don't really like overhead powerlines, especially when there are coming from the electrical post opposite the street. Anyone have done this before or any ideas? Any advice greatly appreciated! Re: Overhead Power lines to established homes 2May 02, 2009 5:34 am our incoming overhead connection and pole are due to be upgraded in the next few weeks (we're in a very old suburb) and they've given us the option of having the line put underground but there is a charge for it. we would then have to get an electrician to do our part of the connection to the house as well. i dont think it's available in all areas (at least here in perth) so you may need to contact your local power company to find out how widely available it is or if the conversion is only available in certain areas. what we've been told is that they've selected certain suburbs here with overhead lines that they feel are suitable for the conversion and ours is one of them Re: Overhead Power lines to established homes 3May 02, 2009 10:09 am Hi Kingster, I guess it depends upon where you live and who your provider is. We are in Melbourne (Glen Eira municipality) and are doing a knock down rebuild. In addition to going from an aerial supply to underground, we also had the power pole moved to accomodate a new driveway. This also led to an upgrade of the telstra pit, because it was to be embedded within the new driveway so it needed to be of a type that could be driven on. I also asked the provider to relocate our neighbour's aerial run, as it was off the pole out front of our place, across our property and into theirs. I had this changed to come off the pole from two doors down, and into their place. Funnily enough this was actually a shorter run, which I believe helped my case for the change. In your case you need the provider to create a power pit on the boundary of your property, you then get a trench and conduit done from your switchboard to the pit. Sounds like it might be pretty expensive for you if the pole's on the opposite side of the road. Our pit was only 2-3 metres from the pole itself. Do you have any phone or cable tv/broadband stuff coming in off the same pole ? If so, another pit will be needed for this, and you'll need to deal separately with the telco to get it arranged. The upshot is that it's possible, but sounds like a lot of dough for aesthetics, particularly if you're buying established and not building. Cheers, Justin. Re: Overhead Power lines to established homes 4May 02, 2009 10:13 am We built in an established suburb, about 30 years old. When connecting the power to the block we opted to pay the extra $1600 or so to have underground power. We just got in touch with the people who did the power connection ( Alinta??) and told them thats what we wanted. I didn't want overhead, but if you want 'high voltage' or the power has to travel a long distance from the transformer you will need overhead lines. Although if you have a bigger transformer you can have Aluminum power cable ( think thats what it was) instead of copper cable. The Al cable can be used for longer distances. Under ground is also a lot cheaper than overhead. I think the underground cable was something like $3000/100m while the overhead in $7000/100m. Oh and just for interest the transformer will cost about $27000. Hi, Can anyone give me approx. price for overhead cupboards. TIA 0 16675 Bigger the better for storage for me IMO. But I guess it's harder to tell the cost/benefit in your example - mainly the 'cost'? If you go 700mm, what are you doing extra… 2 2417 Would also like an opinion from anyone that has used xcem over hebel for floors. Thanks 1 14442 |
