Whether an alfresco is built as part of the house or a pergola is added later is a matter of personal taste and has been well debated before. Probably one of the major considerations though is which direction it will face/prevailing weather/angle of the sun etc. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Alfresco or Not? 22Apr 27, 2009 8:36 pm We are actually having both, a small alfresco and a big add on pergola which will run the whole side of our house as it has to fit our outdoor table and seating, an outdoor kitchen/BBQ area and our lubbly bubbly spa We have seen a really nice one at a display home. It was stained rather than painted and had the reed under the roof, it looked great and very tropical. Next time I am there I will take some photos of it. Re: Alfresco or Not? 23Apr 27, 2009 9:13 pm Well, we are having an alfresco, we thought better do it now cause anything we want to do later on that has a roof needs a DA, pergolas don't if left open without a roof but if we wanted it to be covered with like clear uv sheeting then that needed approval. We have 2 small kids and on rainy days they can go out there, plus we have a dog whose new home will be out there in a kennel.
