Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 19, 2009 11:58 am While doing our usual Sunday drive around to sticky beak at new homes, I finally found one with the external combo of weatherboard and colourbond I've been trying to explain to DH. He liked it, so far so good. I want to ask the owner who built their house and if I could take a couple of quick pics for reference. Do you think that would be intrusive? Would I be over-stepping to ask a ball park figure also? Possumchops Now the proud owner of 3.7acres of Serenity. Colour selection completed! Soon to go to council. Re: Ask the owner? 2Apr 19, 2009 12:17 pm Go ahead and ask the owner, in my opinion. If he is proud of his house he will only be too happy to share his knowledge. The worst he will do is say no. We were flattered that he liked it enough to stop . Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Ask the owner? 5Apr 19, 2009 12:51 pm Definitely ask! Not sure about asking for price - that may be a) a little personal and b) a bit difficult to respond to - because price is very subjective according to internal fitout etc. If you can find out who the builder is, then you can speak to the builder direct to get an idea of what a house to your specifications will cost Re: Ask the owner? 7Apr 19, 2009 1:00 pm There is nothing stopping you asking. they will either think of it as a compliment or feeling it is rude. You've got nothing to lose. Though I'd maybe sneak off at least one photo on a separate occasion before hand. We've driven around a lot of homes in the past 2 years and I've taken quite a few photos of retaining walls, facades, fences, patios etc etc. Dh won't stop and ask people about their homes but I will. So far I've asked people about their driveways , roofing colours, garage colours. In a town near us is a house with a patio that is exactly what we want for the house. I've tried to take numerous photos from the roadside but there are too many trees to get a clear shot. I've already told Hubby I will be knocking on their door at some stage to ask them for more information about their patio. i.e. did they get it built for them, or do it themselves. etc etc how long ago etc. In the same area i doorknocked to find out a garage door colour. worked out well as it turned out the man who answered the door was about to set up a new wholesale/direct to the public plant nursery business having recently moved to the area. great business card to get. Re: Ask the owner? 8Apr 20, 2009 7:08 pm So i stopped on the way home and they were so lovely. LEt me take photos, gave me the full tour, explained everything in great detail. You could tell they were extremely proud. It was even nicer up close. He was also super happy with his builder, couldn't praise him enough. Definitely going to make contact with the builder, I know who he is and have dealt with him at work, and after finding out it was him I wasn't at all suprised. A good solid experience local guy. I was also inspired and finally stopped by the house with the patio we like today. I hadn't realised that their brick is the same as ours. ( house is on a couple of acres so I'd never been that close) So now I know who built it for them. The lady laughed when i said I'd tried to take a photo of the patio from the main road but never had much luck. she said she did that all the time for plants etc as well. Re: Ask the owner? 10Apr 20, 2009 10:44 pm I'm sure the owners would be flattered that you like their colour scheme/patio so much that you wanted info about it. I know if it was me I would be. Reminds me, I need to ask someone about their driveway! Judie Re: Ask the owner? 11Apr 21, 2009 11:16 am If you are a bit shy about taking the photos you could go into Google street view. Re: Ask the owner? 12Apr 21, 2009 10:29 pm I wouldn't mind in the slightest if someone asked me the colours of my bricks / exterior. I would be flattered. We're doing our colour selections at the moment so have been spending most weekends doing "drive bys" taking photos of bricks and render we like. I know how hard it is to choose an exterior and would be grateful if someone was willing to answer questions about their colour seletion. However, I was warned by the people at Austral when they gave me some addresses of the bricks we liked not to knock on anyone's door as they had been getting some complaints.
