Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 16, 2009 9:20 pm I am curious as to whether anyone gave a moment's thought when they did they external colour selections that their neighbours could have the exact same colour scheme. While driving round a few estates in the weekend I could not help noticing how the majority of the new estates are a skyline of charcoal grey rooflines. I am so pleased when we made our selections that we chose what we liked regardless of being dictated to by fashion and am well aware that I didnt want to become a fashion victim of current trends. Does anyone regret their external choices now after seeing what else is around their neighbourhood? no coffee? no work!!! We have to have Tuscan colours and a terracotta coloured roof. There's two houses with everything the same on my street. I've picked a different brick that I haven't seen on my estate (but I'm sure I will) and I picked a completely different render colour to the front. Black windows and Evening Haze colorbond..... everyone else on my street has used Paperbark. I picked what I love.... but was also conscious of making it "mine". http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/2009-04-08_14-32-36_08042009743.jpg I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. The fact is that I completely considered my (one) neighbour when choosing my colour. To be honest, I wanted their colour (cream) but didn't go that way because they did. To this day I wonder if I chose the right colour next to them (red brick/black windows)... Annie A thankful person is a happy person. Now when I wrote this I was thinking that you were one of the people on this forum that had very similar tastes to my own but individual too. I know some covenants are strict and govern the colour schemes but in our estate it was for "natural" colours to be used. We are the only house of the 10 or so under go that do not have a charcoal roof. no coffee? no work!!! The houses all look exactly the same... I hope my neighbours don't have the same as me!!! Not all of them on the estate do though. There's been a few that have pushed the envelope. So I hope a few on my street yet to be built do so. But the thing to remember is that when gardens and paths and driveways go in.... everything takes on a whole new look and individuality really comes through. That's true of all estates. But we originally were going to use Paperbark for fascia and garage door and after seeing soooo much on my street I picked something else. So it definitely did influence me. Terrence Malick Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 8Apr 16, 2009 10:28 pm We arent in an estate.. we are one of two ten acre blocks that have been subdivided from an area of about 120 hectares.. (I believe our blocks were cut to be a chicken farm, but the town objected, the idea was scrapped and the land sold as two blocks). We have one neighbour (the other 10 acre block) and his house is cream bricks with a dark blue roof and garage door. Our house is light grey roof with red brick.. two totally different houses.. funny enough though we were going to go with a cream coloured brick, with a bit of red in it, but they couldnt make them.. so we went red.. There are two houses across the road a bit, and they are different again.. one is black roof, other is green roof.. i love that we all have different colour schemes. As for the question... we did consider the neighbours house colours.. and may have changed colours if they were the same. -Sha Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 9Apr 16, 2009 10:34 pm jido I am curious as to whether anyone gave a moment's thought when they did they external colour selections that their neighbours could have the exact same colour scheme. I don't have a house any closer than 10 or so blocks (or more) to mine so no idea what my neighbours have chosen, but yes, I have a charcoal colour roof and I am happy with that as it's what I wanted. I knew what I wanted and it was only after I picked my bricks that one neighbour pointed out that it really blended in well with the houses either side. One has dark chocolate bricks and one has light vanilla colour. So with mine being beige the 3 houses went from dark to light We all have different roof colours as well. People are being adventurous in my street they are rendering their houses in blue and burgundy, so its going to look all colours of the rainbow Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 11Apr 17, 2009 10:25 am Were the last to build in our street, however some are just at slab. We plan on taking pictures of every other house and making sure they arent too similar to the others. Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 12Apr 17, 2009 12:01 pm I'm building a unit which is joined with another unit and my neighbour and I had to agree on all the exterior colours. All up 24 units are being built in our area. My neighbour asked a few other unit owners what colours they were using as we were going to go Blue, but we found a few around us were using the same colour blue so we decided to go red instead so we could be different. Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 13Apr 18, 2009 9:40 am We live in the Ryde area of Sydney. Council have informed us that colours "should suit the amenity of the neighbourhood" <----- VAGUE!!! We are going with a blue brick, either a dark charcoal coloured flat-profile roof tile or a colorbond roof (in a colour yet to be finalised). There will be a portion of the front facade rendered in a warm shade of white and the garage door is in a colour yet to be finalised. The house will be very different to others nearby but that seems ok with council. We'll wait and see. Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney. Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 14Apr 18, 2009 10:03 am We don't have any "near" neighbours yet but we did drive around the nearby new development and take a look at the homes being built. I would have loved to have built with the 2c type bricks. ( double size ones) but we noticed a lot of people had already done this so we went standard brick size. We've picked a cream coloured brick which many have done. I would have preferred a darker brick but DH didn't like any of them. we've gone for raked mortar which makes our bricks look a little different up close and our choice of brick isn;t that common although there are a couple of people in the town who have used it, at least at this stage no one nearby has done so. Mind you, there are all vacant blocks around us. Most of the new houses have tin roofs and the blue shades are very popular. we were originally going a blue colour but changed to a dark colour ( ironstone) instead. we'll just have to wait and see what gets built around us. There are no restrictions on colours here luckily but houses have to be built of brick or rammed earth only. No timber or clad houses, no use of corrugated steel, no transportable houses, none of those lovelystorybook/ picturebook kit type homes etc. I suspect you could probably do a house using those big concrete panels. or limestone panels though it's not listed as an option in the covenant. Picture book houses. These would not be alllowed which is a shame given we are in a semi rural section of town on non suburban sized blocks My favourite site is this one---> http://www.storybook.com.au/ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ or a nice queenslander style home. Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 15Apr 18, 2009 1:48 pm We were restricted to certain shades of grey for our roof due to estate covenants, so everyone has a similar roof near us. No 2 houses next to each other could have the same colours, so I guess it was 1st in best dressed. Our next door neighbours on both sides both had approval before us, but luckily they didn't choose our Canterbury, so we are lucky. One side is a reddish brick ( i think London Blend perhaps ) which is nice, the other is Lonsdale which is yuk so we wouldn't want it anyway. It is hard when everyone starts at the same time so you can't judge what else is going to be around you. Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 16Apr 18, 2009 4:06 pm I'm having Lonsdale brick. I love it!! Not really offended... just stirring! It'd be bloody boring if we all picked the same! In fact I secretly like that it's not popular... But can you take a pic of the house with the Lonsdale for me?? There's not many around built with it and I'd like to have a look. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 17Apr 18, 2009 4:23 pm We have no other houses around our block at the moment but I would never try and match my house to my neighbours. I just picked what i thought would look good.- Keep in mind that was after i looked at heaps of display homes. If I did have neighbours and i saw something on their house I liked. I may steal the idea but twinge it a bit to make it my own. I like personality on a street and not everything the same. Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! I was the only one that went for a chocolate roof tile and different coloured bricks to everyone else, in fact i thought my house stuck out being different N ow i notice the houses being built in the surrounding streets are leaning towards my brick colour. Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 19Apr 18, 2009 8:58 pm Funny you say that clath... I was out in a few new estates today. I noticed a lot of red roofs which surprised me. They were done to death around a decade ago but black has been the colour of choice recently. It was interesting to see quite a few in the new estates going up. Maybe people are looking for alternatives to charcoal because that has been so popular over the last few years? Maybe red, chocolate and some lighter colours could being coming into their own again? Terrence Malick Re: Did your neighbours colour choices influence yours? 20Apr 18, 2009 9:15 pm Being in an established neighbourhood, we had no problem worrying about being the same... all the surrounding houses were built in the 1950s and are all painted fibre cement (and not very attractive)!!!
