I would do the stairs to match whatever your floor colour will be. That may mean a light stain, or a heavy stain, or clear varnish. If you can, maybe tee up your friend to do the stairs after the floor is down?

Judie Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 22Apr 08, 2009 10:41 pm Sorry, hun - better late than never!!! Ours were stained the same as our bifolds & French doors, which worked quite well, if you remember!!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 23Apr 09, 2009 9:51 am Hi Haywgl It's amazing how simple these decisions seem at the beginning and then when the time comes to finalise them they take on a life of their own. My wall colour has done my head in so much and still I don't know if i've made the right choice. But back to your stairs. Teak is a very dark, very beautiful, but very dark colour. I really love it, I have used it on furniture and also for my skirting boards in the old house. We had Tassie Oak Floors but I used a really light amount and it created a nice contrast. You can adjust the amount of colour used. The thing is though it really depends on how much effort the person doing you stairs is prepared to go to for the right colour. You could also get stains that are closer to the colour of your floorboards. Also, when you put the clear coat on the stairs they will come up a bit darker anyway so will also probably match your floors quite well. It does depend on the wood being used on the stairs as to the final effect. Feast Watson has some great information on their website about stains, sorry I can't remember how to link it so have just typed below. This will take you to their different stains and give you some idea of how they would look. It does depend on the wood you are using as to how the stain will come up. As I said, I did mine myself so could really control how much stain I used, but teak can be quite dark and they may overdo it for your liking. It may be better to stay light or use a stain closer to your floorboard colour. We're having Merbau floors so also having merbau for our stairs. I think it's best to match. http://www.feastwatson.com.au/WoodstainsProoftint.asp After reading my post again I think I may have just added to the confusion. I shouldn't even be allowed to try and help seeing I have had so much trouble choosing a paint colour, and I've had nearly 2 years to decide. Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 25Apr 09, 2009 10:06 am Bel, Here are the photos of our stairs: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We would either lay Blackbutt (upstairs) and seal the treads in clear gloss, or go for Spotted Gum and tint the treads in Jarrah (closest tint, in our opinion, when we brought the sample of Spotted at Bunnings). Hope it helps on your decision. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 26Apr 09, 2009 10:11 am Bel, have you spoken to the people that are going to be doing your wood floors....they might be able to suggest the best coating to allow for your options later. Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 27Apr 09, 2009 10:13 am VJ, they are so beautiful! I really love the look of the painted risers.... I'm biased. It makes such feature of the treads. Just beautiful! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 28Apr 09, 2009 10:21 am they look great VJ! I think I'd go for the clear stain bel, and painted risers..... "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 30Apr 09, 2009 10:37 am Your stairs do look beautiful VJ, and I have to tell you all this stair talk and all these images have got me now asking the builder to quote on wood treads with wood balustrade just so I can try and achieve the wood with white riser look Loving the look............Can I also add, my stairs are made from concrete and the blaustrade is aluminium so this may not happen but its becuse of all this stair talk Now stop it. Sorry to hijack. Sorry to hijack. Step away from the screen now PK - you are only going to confuse yourself even more ..... Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 32Apr 09, 2009 11:47 am Stepping away very slowly...... Now if everyone stopped posting beautiful staircases I would be fine. Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 33Apr 09, 2009 8:08 pm Thanks for your input everyone VJ - I love your stairs they are gorgeous!!! The pics have really helped me so thank-you so much! I have decided that I will not stain them in teak, I will just put the clear poly gloss on them. And I will have the painted risers. I'm thinking of doing the painted risers after handover though - getting the $778 back from PD and get my friend to do it. I'm worried that my SS can't be bothered with the hassle of painting the risers and as a result the workmanship may not be the best. If I get my friend to do it I know he will do the best job he can. Or do people think I just get PD to do it and hope they do a good job. My karma ran over your dogma Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 35Apr 09, 2009 8:15 pm Just to confuse you further... PK... don't read! I would either get them to do it all or do nothing. If they stain it, but don't paint the risers, will your mate have to then strip the stain off the risers to paint them? I'd leave them raw.... and do it all over handover........... I think. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Stairs (AGAIN!!) 38Apr 09, 2009 8:22 pm Bel, Glad that you have finally decided... I agree with joles - do the staining and painting after handover... $778 for painting the risers? what the? by all means, do it later... and use the saved money on something else... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping!
