Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 30, 2009 5:05 pm Hey Are there any interior designers about? Im looking at hopefully becoming one and just wanted to talk to some about it Re: Interior Designers? 2Mar 30, 2009 5:56 pm Hi BabyDesigner, There's Michelle, she can be found in 'Michelle's Interior Decorating Lounge' right here on the forum... And there's Me, plus I'm sure a few others! Re: Interior Designers? 4Mar 30, 2009 6:52 pm d@n I think designing is different to decorating.... Quite right d@n, It comes down to ones level of education, experience, and in part by ones membership with the DIA. There is a lot of crossover though, and the lines are not always easily drawn between the two as they will both often complete identical design tasks. I'm when BabyDesigner logs back on, and interjects some more information we'll all have a better understanding of whether they are more interested in Design or Decoration as a career path. I am after information more on design rather than decoration, but if you can help then that would be great. Basically all I want to know is if I have to do Advanced Diploma in Interior Design at TAFE to become a designer, or are there other methods I could achieve this such as a traineeship of some sorts? I will be moving soon and the rural city used to do the Advanced Diploma at their TAFE but it seems they have stopped doing it and I so desperately want to become one. Re: Interior Designers? 9Mar 30, 2009 9:17 pm I'm an Interior Designer too, well, Interior Architect if you want to get really technical As for what qualifications you have and what job you can get, it often comes down to experience. My thoughts on the whole thing is a degree or diploma in Design will get you an interview and maybe a foot in the door at a firm, then you really learn the rest onsite. Well thats my experience anyway. I learned so much more in the job than I did with 4 years at Uni. If you want to do more training then by all means, do it, but you may find that what you have will get you the job you want, then you will get the experience to work your way up. I myself did a degree course, but there are a lot of 2 year diplomas out there that will teach you the same stuff, and you tend to have a lot more hands on experience. There are also a lot of private colleges that offer design courses, where you end up with a diploma of some sorts. In these courses you learn a lot about design history and trends, and skills like drafting and such that you wont get in a traineeship. Also, the only way you can say "I'm a qualified designer" is by doing a recognised course Built with Bentley homes in Doreen All moved in Dec 2009 Now for the garden! I'd love to get back into it but the city im moving to doesn't do the course any more they have down graded it to cert 3 and that only enables me to work in a paint shop or textiles shop etc. I might have a look if they have any other options for me. Any recommended small/medium builder designers here in Melbourne Victoria? Thanks 0 631 I am looking for someone who might have tackled a similar issue as me.
