Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 20, 2007 3:50 am I would appreciate any information or contact from anybody who has built a "homestead" style home with a verandah right round the outside. Or if you can point me in the right direction for any web based info I would also be grateful. In fact any information on that type of home would be handy . Thank you in advance "MO" Its better to regret things you,ve done, than things you haven't. BUT Never regret growing old because some people never have the privilege. Re: Homestead in the country, Anybody built one ????? 2Mar 20, 2007 7:03 am We are currently building such a House on 15 acres. We knew basically what we wanted so we picked a rectangular house from our local Builders Plans and added a verandah, we went for the Federation Bullnose effect on the Verandah. Architects are expensive so that is why we went with a traditional Builder and just made the the changes that we wanted to one of his designs. Re: Homestead in the country, Anybody built one ????? 4Mar 21, 2007 6:51 am Hi, we haven't actually built the House yet, we are at the 'cut and fill' stage just before they pour the Slab (hopefully next week).
We are building on the Northern Tablelands, near a little town called Guyra. You're correct about it not being a 'fashionable' design among Architects today, but heck fashions come and go which is why we wanted the traditional Homestead with Bullnose Verandah. We did a drive around all our local towns, took pictures of the style of house that we wanted, and then found a suitable House Plan that would look good with a verandah added on. Good Luck with your search. Re: Homestead in the country, Anybody built one ????? 5Mar 21, 2007 10:03 am Did you happen to look at the stone house beeing built on the northern exit of Tenterfield.
What a magnificant job. Myself and a couple of friends just had to stop and have a look at it thinking it was a tourist attraction being built. It is a private residence being built from loacl stone and timber from the old bridge right next door. The family invited us in and were so proud to show us what they had been doing...............so much work by hand. Scraping old timber by hand, adze work and staining etc and double stone walls I'll try to attach some photos below http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/4798/img2643tk9.jpg http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/34/img2643jq7.jpg http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1300/img2646vy3.jpg[/url] Re: Homestead in the country, Anybody built one ????? 7Mar 21, 2007 6:20 pm Red Baron , We look forward to some progress reports ![]() ![]() Its better to regret things you,ve done, than things you haven't. Do your recce during Summer, you will find that the Tamworth region is a very dry, dusty, HOT area is summer. Much nicer up the Range between Uralla and Glen Innes, although the Winters are a wee bit cooler. Re: Homestead in the country, Anybody built one ????? 9Mar 28, 2007 7:03 pm Thanks for that Red Baron , I spent a lot of time round that area in my youth . I have not been round that way for 10 years. But I hear Tamworth is pretty "Go Ahead"? And I am under strict instructions from the Mrs and kids we have to be we have to be within 40 minutes driving time of there HAHA. So it gives me a bit of scope to look. Anywhere as long as its not too near a river. Have you come across any decent designs for "homestead" type homes on the net. Best ones we have come across seem to be from the kit home people "NUSTEEL" We know what we want for the outside design (just have a look at the avatar!!) but its the interior's proving trouble. (Mrs and daughters want everything !) . We have friends down in Scone but I dont want to live in the Hunter. Still we will have a look later this year (hopefully) "MO" Its better to regret things you,ve done, than things you haven't. BUT Never regret growing old because some people never have the privilege. It is cellulose fibre blow in insulation. Basically shredded news paper that is blown into the roof space. It was very popular in the late 90's.
