Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 27, 2009 12:11 pm Hi all We have bought a place that is still under construction but very close to completion (3 weeks). We have saved ourselves the worry and hassle of building from scratch, but we have a dilemma... the house just aint pretty. But that's okay. we can work on that... The house is mostly an orange face brick. The garage is bagged and a light grey colour. The problem I think ****** with the massive wall to the left of the garage. If there was a window there then it wouldn't be a problem (they *were* going to put a window in, but decided not to for some reason). But as it is now, that side of the house is very "heavy". My thoughts are to make this a feature wall and turn a negative into a positive. We were thinking some stacked stone. What do you guys think? We have an idea on what colour we'd like, but maybe you can give us your suggestions... Is stacked stone "played out". Another thought I had was horizontal hardwood slats. It is not a good wall to render - the bricks are very "textured" and would need a good dolop of render to make flat IFKWIM Pic of our house when we first inspected it - see the ugly brick wall...? Re: Help - Ideas for outdoor feature wall 2Mar 27, 2009 3:51 pm What about some type of cladding? Maybe in a the same colour as the garage door or something that complements the door and the bricks. Not very helpful, am I? Re: Help - Ideas for outdoor feature wall 3Mar 27, 2009 5:18 pm I still like stackstone Max, but there are some new kinds of stone cladding available now that might suit better. Not much help, but there are others much smarter than me here I can hear you lot and they will be more helpful. Re: Help - Ideas for outdoor feature wall 4Mar 27, 2009 5:21 pm I think stacked stone has played out..... sorry. But I never liked it to start with. I remember the eighties... I wouldn't do anything permanent. A massive pot with a tall, striking plant against the wall will make all the statement you need! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Keep it light but just enough difference for that wall to stand out. I would not put stack stone at this point. I also would do a feature planting here to soften the exterior a bit...add some trees/plants that have a bit of height. Mrs B Re: Help - Ideas for outdoor feature wall 7Mar 27, 2009 5:38 pm I agree with Jo…stack stone has had its day! I love texture… all the more the better, so to me render would be great! Jo, I was going to do what you suggested and put a BMP (big massive pot) there with a nice looking tree to break it up while we decide what we're going to do about it... I love all your opinions, you are all BRILLIANT - this forum is awesome!!! Oh, and Michelle, i was meant to acronym "if you know what i mean" but came out all flibberty jibberty... sorry. Re: Help - Ideas for outdoor feature wall 10Mar 27, 2009 6:02 pm I like stack stone, but on such a large area, it could be too busy. The brick itself is a bit busy anyway.... I agree with Mrs B's suggestion of a different colour render. And a landscaping feature in front of that section of wall would break it up too. A striking plant, a large urn....something? Currently scaping the land. Re: Help - Ideas for outdoor feature wall 18Mar 27, 2009 10:33 pm I like these ideas. At this stage I am leaning towards 1. Painting the brick something light (maybe even colourmatch the garage door) 2. Hang up a cast iron design from the top. 3. BMP with funky plant at the bottom. I think that the iron design will get lost if I don't visually "flatten" the wall first. I agree with all of you who said that wall is too busy. Obviously rendering will be the best thing to achieve that. But I don't really want to render that wall. I still want it to have some "interest". Hopefully the texture of the brick itself will suffice. It may still be too busy. Having said that, I like the sandstone idea. We could bring it all together with sandstone retaining walls and garden beds and letterbox even...! Not to mention those kick-a$$ stepping stone pavers Damn, so many options.
