Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 18, 2007 5:04 pm Hi all! We have just purchased our first house and have enthusiastically started renovating.
We have prepped the walls and ceiling in the spare room (as advised by staff at Bunning’s) and very excitedly started painting. We had hoped that we would have the rooms finished by Sunday afternoon and be able to sit back and appreciate our hard work. However, it is now Sunday afternoon and are left scratching our heads confused about where and what went wrong. Worst of all we have an unfinished room?!?!?! We started with applying British One ceiling paint to the ceiling. Just as we were finishing the first coat and getting ready to stop for a short break, we noticed cracking starting to appear near the cornice. After a short discussion we thought that perhaps we hadn’t prepped that particular area on the ceiling properly. After a few more minutes we could see not only was it cracking, the paint we had just applied was also lifting the original paint, exposing the gyprock. Another half an hour later revealed more cracking in several places on the ceiling and on the cornice. Bunning’s have advised that the people who applied the original paint job must not have sealed the gyprock?!? But, wouldn’t that mean that the original paint should have cracked too? They has advised we strip the ceiling back completely and apply a sealant before we continue to paint. We were of the belief that the original paint was water based. We have applied two large sample areas on the wall and has not cracked. Is it possible that the ceiling is oil based and the walls water based????? Would that make the paint peel the way it has??? Please some advice would be greatly appreciated. Anything to shed some light on the subject or to suggest how we rectify the problem. Many thanks J & D Re: Paint Job A DISASTER! 2Mar 18, 2007 6:22 pm How old is the house or in particular the room?
Really need more information to offer an opinion If its really old there may be kalsomine type paint under other layers which has decided to let go. Was the previous layer a gloss finish? like used in a wet area or kitchen? Did you try the 'slice the paint in a small section with a blade and then apply sticky tape and see if it could be pulled off'(the paint layer)? Re: Paint Job A DISASTER! 3Mar 18, 2007 7:12 pm Grime,
The house is 20 - 25 years old. We are of the understanding that the walls and trims were painted just before we purchased the house in Dec, but the ceiling was not. The previous finish appeared to be a flat ceiling white, not a gloss finish. The areas where the paint has cracked can be very easily pulled away from the gyprock. Most areas on the ceiling seem almost flawless, but in other areas we can see that small cracks are begining to appear (lumps under the paint) and other areas longer cracks. The paint looks almost like thin mud that has dried in the sun. The way it lifts off from the surface. Hope this helps. Many thanks. J & D Re: Paint Job A DISASTER! 4Mar 19, 2007 2:22 pm Hi Grime,
I started to remove the cracked paint to prep the walls again for painting. Using a scraper, the paint peeled off with very little effort at all. Most of the paint has been removed. I can not remove any of the remaining paint. From this point, do you think that if I was to reseal the exposed gyprock, fill, sand and wash that I would be okay to re paint? If so, what would you recommend for the ceilings in the remainder of the house? Cheers Jenni Re: Paint Job A DISASTER! 5Mar 19, 2007 4:13 pm As the room is 20/25 years old then it most likely isn't kalsomine.
Moisture can cause the paint to peel and the only cure is to stop moisture getting under the paint.Did you have plenty of air circulation while the paint was drying? But yes sand as much as possible and perhaps apply a sealer/undercoat prior to applying the top coats leaving plenty of time for the paint coats to dry naturally. hth Regardless of wall hung toilet or floor pan toilet your feet will be right on drain, seems to me the waste should not be in that location given the design.
