Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 24, 2009 4:24 pm We are currently in the process of subdividing our block into 2 titles. We have gone through the process with the surveyors and have just submitted our application for demolition approval to the council. There is one issue, there is a fire hydrant by the street right in the middle of what will be one of the blocks! I have spoken to the surveyor about this and he doesnt seem to think it will be a problem, and that we will just need to position our driveway so that it is not in the way. Does anyone have any experience with this? I am terrified to think how much the council will charge for the removal/repositioning of a fire hydrant? Re: Fire Hydrant 2Mar 24, 2009 10:52 pm i wouldn't worry, just move the drive ways... and be glad to be so close to a fire hydrant.... not really detailed info on SA stuff but in Victoria they are maintaned and installed by the MFS... http://www.whittlesea.vic.gov.au/conten ... &cnid=1454 Fire Hydrants Fire hydrants have been placed throughout the City of Whittlesea to give fire services quick access to water for fighting fires. The hydrants are usually on the naturestrip and easily identified by their silver cover and red top. In urban areas, many of these traditional fire hydrants have been replaced with ground plugs. These are also placed on the naturestrip, but are quite flat and square with a black lid. Fire Hydrant Maintenance Fire hydrants and ground plugs are routinely inspected by the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and/or Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB). If the hydrants or plugs require adjustment or repairs, CFA/MFB notify Council to arrange appropriate maintenance. You can help to keep this important equipment in good order by ensuring that hydrants or plugs outside your property are not covered or hidden by soil, grass or plants. They should always be easily visible to allow quick and immediate access for fire fighting. I have had a good look on the internet and have failed to find any info so I was getting a bit worried. Im pretty sure if it is going to be a problem the council will pick it up! And find a way to charge us something! Ta Re: Fire Hydrant 4Mar 25, 2009 10:02 pm Hi Leah, I thought that in SA the old fire plugs are being replaced by blue cats eyes in the centre of the road that indicate where an outlet is located under the road. We have a very old fire plug in front of our place and my understanding was that if we call the council they will take it away and replace it with the blue reflector. Re: Fire Hydrant 5Mar 26, 2009 9:09 am Thanks for the info - thats great news. I will give them a call and let you know how I go! Cheers, Leah Re: Fire Hydrant 6Mar 26, 2009 9:30 am OK an observation...I don't now if it's necessarily a "problem". Inner city block to me says narrow frontage and limited driveway space for parking...therefore if there is a fire hydrant in the "middle" of the block that will limit parking in front of the house as you can't park in front of a hydrant or fire plug. I guess from a resale point of view it only matters if someone notices the plug...but if you are choosing to build your own house on one of the sites I'd go for the one without the plug/hydrant. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard We are tossing up between a Jarrahdale radiant wood fire (the Pioneer) and a convection wood fire (Innovator or Countryman) but cannot decide on which type of wood fire is… 0 5250 Need some advice.
