Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 24, 2009 2:34 pm Its time to start thinking about the stairs up on to the veranda to the front door. We liked this sort of look: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And here is where it will go: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The ground will need to be leveled out along that yellow line. And the distance to the first post is approx. 2400. And its about 900 off the ground. Will we need a stringer or two in the middle of the span, or is one at each end enough. Any tips or tricks to getting the stairs the right size/space/etc? I'm a bit new to all this. As for your stairs, it would probably be easiest to cut in and make a platform there, then stairs up the hill and down the hill depending on where you would walk too (EG garage, yard, etc.) Re: Entry stairs 4Mar 24, 2009 6:08 pm your house is looking great, very envious of how well its come together for you! (on here too... moven very slow) i think itd look great with the full 2400 stairs, a really welcoming entry! have you got a copy of the australian house building manual?? its a great reference tool. i just had a look at the tables and for the spreader size, it only had treads up to 1500 span, so if you were to go the full 2400 id think youd need 3 spreaders, then youd have 1200 tread span? (would that be right...??) anyway i can write out the table and send it too you if you want, might help? Re: Entry stairs 5Mar 25, 2009 8:33 am Thanks for the heads up mrs_martin. We have got that book, but I managed to skip that page and go straight to the next one. Oops. I'll have a read of that and see what I can find. The treads are about 30-35 thick, but I need to check what timber you can get. And the stringers are 240x35. Being 2400 wide I dunno if I need another stringer in the middle, or some bracing under each tread. They give another guide in that the product (multiplication) of the going and rise must be between 45000 and 48000, in your case it's 170 x 300 = 51000 which is > 48000. If you overlapped the stairs by 30 mm and therefore had an effective going of 270 you would get away with 170 mm rise...as 170 x 270 = 45900 and therefore complying with the Australian Standard. Note the maximum slope for a staircase is 45 degrees and the minimum is 26.5 degrees. It would also be a safer staircase with the overlap...most staircases have an overlap on the stairs as you generally tuck your toes just underneath the next tread when you walk up. If you don't keep to the code requirements you may have a problem with occupancy certificates or whatever is similar in your state...there are a couple of house designers...AusDesign comes to mind...who can check my interpretation of the code. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Entry stairs 8Mar 25, 2009 2:35 pm Excellent info Mike. Thanks for the response, exactly the sort of info I was looking for. I'll make some adjustments to the plan. Go 270 goings with a 30 overlap.
