Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 23, 2009 12:47 am Hi First time poster. Long time lurker . Just wondering if anyone would be able to give me a rough estimate price wise on a couple of things I would like to do around our home this year. Bifold doors - we currently have double sliding doors but would like to replace them with these. Unsure of measurements. (too lazy to get off my bum and check) Replacing a benchtop. 6 lineal metres in total. Currently have a gloss laminate, would like to change to Essastone or something similar. No-one is really interested in doing 'just' a benchtop - having trouble finding someone who will do just that. Stone cladding - around 3 m2 fireplace surround. Also - a window seat, with drawers underneath 1m x 2m. I would love it if someone could give me a rough idea on what to expect for installation and the product itself - and maybe point me in the right direction. Cheers, Jacs Re: Costings for work/renos WA 2Mar 23, 2009 1:23 pm Hi jac, I think the biggest problem you are going to face is getting tradesmen to do these small jobs. They have so much work on these days that they're not usually interested in taking on new work unless it is big. Our way of dealing with the tradesman shortage has been to become very handy ourselves, buy the materials and DIY, or you might also think about having things made up and doing your own installation. e.g. you should be able to get a cabinet making factory to make up your window seat if you give them exact measurements and tell them exactly what you want. They may offer an installation service or you could install it yourself which would be the easy part, but I doubt you'll get a carpenter out to do it on site. As far as costing goes, it will depend a lot on the materials being used and the quality and prices can vary a lot. But basically what I'm saying is, don't expect to ring up places and get them to come out and quote etc on small jobs, have your project worked out first, know what you want and draw it up with measurements and be prepared to do the leg work and go to them for quotes and costing. Re: Costings for work/renos WA 3Mar 23, 2009 2:48 pm Thanks Piscean. I am a nurse, I work night shift and my Dh works Fly in/Fly Out 2 weeks on, 1 week off (also add 3 children to the mix) - this alone makes it hard to knuckle down and do the projects ourselves. If I had more time I would at least attempt it, but I'm afraid I have none. More than anything I would like to know just how much to expect to pay. Thanks, Jacs Re: Costings for work/renos WA 4Mar 23, 2009 3:10 pm Hi First time poster. Long time lurker . Bifold doors - we currently have double sliding doors but would like to replace them with these. Unsure of measurements. (too lazy to get off my bum and check) Depends if you want timber or aluminium, last year I got some new windows put in form Hi-Lite Aluminum in Malaga, they were really good! We only got 4 windows so not a big job, needed them installed too. The will do a FREE quote. The price really depends on the measurements. If you call them they may be able to give you a ball park figure over the phone Replacing a benchtop. 6 lineal metres in total. Loads of cabinet makers in Osbourne park, even try your local community paper, at least then you know they will come to your area. Stone cladding - around 3 m2 fireplace surround. not sure, sorry Also - a window seat, with drawers underneath 1m x 2m. see above comment I would love it if someone could give me a rough idea on what to expect for installation and the product itself - and maybe point me in the right direction.
