Even within species there can be variation in quality. There is a requirement to use 'durability class 1 or 2 timber or H3 treated timber for exposed to the weather structural members. In some cooler drier climates the use of other timbers with the correct application of protective coatings & regular maintenance may suffice but this is subjective. In Vic I would recommend H3 treated pine with a stress grade rating of F7 or if available F8. Select posts free of sap lines & either use a good exterior primer with 2 coats of exterior top coat or a liberal coating of good pentrating stain.
