Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 10, 2009 7:31 pm So far I have bought a front loader, tv unit, new indoor plant and decorative twigs, but I have a huge list of things I am still planning on buying before my cottage is built and is being stored in my spare bedroom. What did you buy?
I am trying to decide if I can start looking at things like paint, curtains, etc and can you buy now or do you wait til its built? Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 3Mar 10, 2009 7:51 pm umm gargoyles for the garden ( they are boxed up until we move) , ixl heaters for the bathrooms( builder is expecting them)
We've been really careful not to buy as we haven't anywhere to store anything.I am so envious of those who are able to start getting organised. But we've been window shopping for aircon, wood heaters, spas, paving, light fittings, flooring, ( ok we've paid the deposit and ordered our cork), looked at carpets, and new beds. Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 5Mar 10, 2009 8:13 pm I just bought a Blanco microwave and the trim kit to match the kitchen appliances provided by Porter Davis. It cost me an arm and leg, but I got the best deal available in the country Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 6Mar 10, 2009 8:13 pm So is it normal to want to replace the entire house? New dinner set, new cutlery, new knives, a dining table suite, new bedroom suite, home theatre set and so on... I've still got at least 4 months until it is built, how much can I accumulate in this time? Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 7Mar 10, 2009 8:48 pm Where do I start???
Two 3 seater couches, 2 tables, endless amounts of decorator items, and I have my eye on the fridge we want, plus 3 shelves for the kids TV area. I've also changed all the coat hangers from crappy silver/wire ones to nice wooden ones (it will look much better in the WIR ), plus bed linen, throw rugs, cushions, pictures and fames, bathroom 'bits' , a bird cage and a gorgeous lamp. I have my eye on plenty of other stuff, just shopping around trying to find the best 'deal'. Only problem is...I have completely run out of places to store stuff...particually the larger pieces. Just try and stop me, though!!! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Couches, a fridge, rugs, decoration stuff, and many other tiny stuff in our 'to-buy list' .. I'm thinking that I should wait until the Boxing Day sales since my house won't be completed until March/April next year (hopefully ).. Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 9Mar 10, 2009 10:59 pm Two fifths of nothing. What's wrong with sitting on a milk crate? Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 10Mar 11, 2009 6:57 am We will be looking at buying some additional furniture because we got rid of some furniture before we moved because it wouldn't fit in this house. This rental is smaller than our last house. Stuff that was old and falling apart. i.e. the chipboard bookcase I bought when I first starting teaching and dragged around the country with me 26 years ago. So we need to replace bookcases and an extra lounge we had in our family room. We also had to get rid of a filing cabinet and coffee tables. While for the moment I can live without a coffee table I would like to buy 2 filing cabinets for the new house. Won't happen straight away though. We could do with a couple of extra bookcases as well since we moved Dh has managed to purchase at least one full bookcase worth of books. Our kids beds need replacing. If we had stayed in our last house we would have been replacing them as well. As much as I would love to buy lots of new replacement things for the new house just for the sheer delight of doing so it "aint gonna happen". BUT i can dream/window shop. A new dining table would be great but our current one will do the job fine. There are enough things that need to be purchased before we start replacing stuff. Curtains, carpets, paint, soil improver, plants, fences, retaining walls. Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 11Mar 11, 2009 8:06 am 4 Light fittings.... yes I know they will probably be out of warranty by the time they go in but they were a great buy and I love them!!! And that's it! We are in extremely early stages though. I'm hanging out for some new towels but they will have to wait I guess. Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 12Mar 11, 2009 8:11 am Wow, I'm not the only one with an obession with shopping for my new place...
It my first time owning a place and as such I have never bothered making a rental look nice, but asthis units mine I want to look really good! I'd love new towels, but at this stage not sure what colour I want to match the bathroom Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 13Mar 11, 2009 8:30 am wow I must show DH this thread to prove how good I have been ... I only bought a dishwasher and a mirror (which I don't know where to put!).

Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 14Mar 11, 2009 8:39 am Well, we didn't replace all our cutlery and linen just for the new house
I did buy a dinner set, someone gave me a gift of money to buy something for the new house so that seemed a good idea to use it for. We bought a larger fridge and TV -something we wanted anyway but didn't have right space for in old house - and some furniture- TV unit, lounge suite, old one needed replacing anyway, dining room hutch and 2 casual sofas for family room and 2 rugs for family and dining room. We didn't replace things just for the sake of getting new ones, it was either things we couldn't have used in old house due to different space (eg old TV unit was a corner one for a smaller TV, I actually loved my old wall unit but it wouldn't fit in different lounge room shape) or things we didn't have in old house such as the rugs - old house had carpet in all liveing areas. I had a separate 'slush fund' saveing up for these items - we didn't buy and store the large items before we moved in but had pre-ordered ready for handover date. And we still have the same bedroom suite we bought when we moved into last house - in 1986 !! Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 15Mar 11, 2009 8:42 am Well for nearly every house i have all ways bought a new toaster and kettle.
But this time its sort of different i don't know why. I have bought Heated towel racks. John, Tarin and the Kids Built and moving in to the Regent Grande with Masterton homes http://thebrownsaremovingtothecountry.blogspot.com Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 16Mar 11, 2009 9:20 am Hall table, mirror, coffee table, lamp tables, lots of Bed linen, towels, storage stuff and rubbish bins from Ikea, clear shoe boxes for DD (they've come in handy for her 15 million pairs of Havaianas!), Sheers from a shop in New York via ebay, various hooks for the cupboard under the stairs, baskets for bathroom drawers, recycling container thing for pantry, baskets for pantry, we ordered a new couch for the HT (took me three months to pick colour) six months before we had handover, some lights for our portico, solar lights for around the pool, we got a new s/s microwave but that was because our old one blew up, few little decorater items........I think that's it. Oh and some lamp shades, but haven't found bases that I like yet. Happy at Home Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 18Mar 11, 2009 9:37 am Ok, if we are counting all little things - yes, I did buy some new bedside lamps and a kitchen bin - well the old one was attached to the old kitchen and yes, some hooks and some shoe racks Re: What did you buy before your house was built? 19Mar 11, 2009 11:25 am so far we've got a plasma TV and two beds... lots of kitchen stuff but no appliances as yet.
we know what we want as in fridge and washing machine but are looking for a good sale. we are waiting on our kitchen bench to be installed, or at least the base, so we know how big of a couch to get. hopefully it's sooner rather than later because most places say they need 8 weeks!
