Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 12, 2009 8:32 pm I just got a look at my kichen and bathroom cupboards.
I have a moulded routed doors and I expected the tops of the handles to be level with the moulding cut into the door if this makes sense. But my handles are higher and I am a bit dissapointed with this but there is nothing I can do about it as the holes have been drilled. I didnt even thing about mentioning this when we were designing the kitchen etc. Is this a normal position for the handles? Its just one of those funny things that you dont even think about but could bug you for ages later I will take some photos tomorow if I get chance. I also think they look a bit chunky Look forward to your views when I post the photos. Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Where are your handles? 2Mar 12, 2009 10:32 pm Sorry to hear that things don't appear to be turning out how you hoped mate
I'm trying to picture your cupboards and handles how they've done it and then how you say you'd hoped they'd be but l can't!....l'm sure it's not as bad as you think it is.....anyhow, best to wait to see some pics. I read your paint colour post too and l reckon that it will all be alright in the end. Doubt, uncertainty and fear that it ain't gonna all come together is probably a very normal thing buildees go through.... She'll be right.....tomorrow is indeed a new day Enjoy your wine tonight and let us know how your feeling about your kitchen and paint tomorrow. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ By taff Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ By taff I was persuaded to go with these kitchen handles, I am slowly getting used to them, The other ones I liked were the same style but not as chunky, a lot finer looking. I looked through mags and saw handle positions vary considerably, and there were a few in this position. What do you guys think. I think I would have trouble getting new handles anyway as the hole positions vary in all of them. I think maybe when everything is finished I wont put so much emphasis on them Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Where are your handles? 4Mar 14, 2009 3:43 pm I understand what you mean about hoping they'd be even with the moulding, but honestly?? They look fantastic.
I had to actually go back and read what you were worried about. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Where are your handles? 5Mar 14, 2009 3:47 pm Personally I would have specified the bottom of the handles to line up with the horizontal routing in the doors - which looks to be about 50mm and is where I put handles as a matter of course if no specifications are provided anyway...
But as you said the holes are already in and they won't be moving; the good news is that a significant number of handles have the same centre to centre with their locating holes, so you may well find a non "post and rail" handle that matches the existing pattern - if you find a handle where the grip does not extend past the uprights, like the ones in your bathroom for example, the visual effect of the handles being so close to the edges of the doors will be significantly diminished. Good luck. And I had such a shock that the kitchen was in as they didnt even ask me where I wanted my handles, I hadnt realised that they had even built the kitchen I thought it was ages away! I bet they didnt even look to see what I had picked until it was time to fit them. I could find something like the bathroom ones I suppose. But I also have to try and get the both lengths as well as the pot draw ones are quite long. I think from hole to hole they are 10 cms on one and 30 cms on the other. Maybe if I tell the cabinet makers I am not happy that they didnt consult me they could do something about it. I may mention it to them and see how I feel before handover then make a decison. I suppose at least the post lines up with the routing. In my own opinion (since you asked) I find the end of the rails extending down as far as they do a bit of an incongruous look...makes the handles look too close to the edge of the door - but as others have said, it's not the first thing that jumps out at you when looking at this (very nice) kitchen - it's only once it has been drawn to one's attention that it becomes more noticeable - but you are the one who will be looking at these doors every day so it is your call. I do think that you should have been consulted about the position of the handles as there is no "standard" and this is something that the client should advise on. It looks to me that they positioned the bottom locating holes at the same distance in as they did on the bathroom cabinets and then someone else came along and said "hey, these doors are having Post and Rail handles, not Square End!" It is far from the end of the world and something that I am sure you could find peace with, but equally I would suggest that you at least run it past your cabinetmaker and see if you can get a solution out of him. The "100"mm handles are quite possibly 98mm which is a very standard offset and the "300" similarly could be a 298, again a dimension which features on a number of different styles...then again they might be exactly 100 + 300 which might limit your options; this can depend on the supplier who provided the handles in the first place as they often have several styles in the same dimension set. It can't hurt to have a chat with the fabricator and make sure he is made aware that you would have at least expected to have discussed the placement of these handles. Cheers, Earl Re: Where are your handles? 12Mar 14, 2009 11:39 pm I think it's the handle size etc, not the placement of the door actually. But having said that, if you hadn't asked about it, I would not have noticed one bit - but I know we like our things to be right - gawd knows we paid for them!
Good luck, and just don't mention it to anyone, I doubt anyone would think twice about it. Annie A thankful person is a happy person.
