Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 11, 2009 5:03 pm We initially started research on solar hot water, talking to a few companies at expos and in shop ect for our new house. But were told by Solarhart and our local solar man that heat pumps were more efficient and much better for the enviroment.
Quantum being the original and Solarhart and Rheem doing a diff one that seems to be the same except for the sticker. I looked up the websites, but to be honest it made sense, but not really, if you know what I mean. So decided to take the salesmans word for it and have specified a Rheem 320L heatpump in our new house. Since then Ive discovered that forums are the best place for getting honest feedback on anything!! and have found only negative feedback on heatpumps. Mainly the noise and cost. Our last water heater was a gas one and in our new house we have decided to get PV solar power conected to the grid based on our previous electricty usage. Im worried that our electricty usage will be through the roof( no pun intended ) because of the heatpump! Re: Heat pumps....have i made the right decision? 2Mar 11, 2009 5:39 pm A heat pump system uses around 25% of the energy a full electric system does if you listen to the quoted numbers, is this the number you are concerned about?
They do make a little noise but they arent loud, maybe locate it away from bedroom windows and you should be fine Does this help or am i missing the point? Re: Heat pumps....have i made the right decision? 3Mar 11, 2009 5:46 pm No you got it!
Its just that with our last house it was a gas water heater, which means no cost on electricty. So even though this one runs at 25% of standard, thats still more than gas... and ive always been under the impression that standard elect heaters were the most expensive to run. Im not sure exactly what i was looking for in this post....just other peoples opinions i guess. And for someone to confirm that the heat pump IS better for the enviriment than a gas boosted solar HWH ta!!!!! Re: Heat pumps....have i made the right decision? 4Mar 11, 2009 5:56 pm Gas boosted would be a little friendlier than a heat pump, im not up to speed on the green'ness of gas and if its renewable or harmful to the environment.
But a heat pump is still considered friendly as per the government rebates available, it does still use the environment for power for most of the heating *edit* - as in the hot air, not abusing the environment Ive personally chosen a Heat Pump over an Instant Gas System as our estate doesnt have natural gas and bottled hot water would cost more than a full electric system if running full gas I would sleep fine at night with the Heat Pump Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10.
