I think the keep it simple approach when searching works.
I just noticed the report post icon, is that new or is it one of those, nice hair cut - oh, I got that two weeks ago type of things???? ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Let's Use The Search Button 24Mar 10, 2009 8:22 pm The bigger and older H1 gets, the more unwieldy it will become, especially for new members.
Maybe the individual forums can be split in the future, e.g. Building A New House can be split into Your Land, Design and Selection, Construction, and Handover. Maybe there is also room for a Demolition forum. I don't think we actually need to split the forums yet, but it will make searching a whole lot easier in the future. At least H1 is not like another board I sometimes visit. There, on one hand members are chastised by others for not searching, and on the other hand are berated for digging up old threads! Sheeeesh! There, on one hand members are chastised by others for not searching, and on the other hand are berated for digging up old threads! Sheeeesh! I think the issue is only about threads being repeated over and over again - if you do a search and the only thread is quite old, surely its fine to start a new one on the same topic? Re: Let's Use The Search Button 27Mar 10, 2009 11:28 pm I try to use the search function wherever l can, but l suck badly at it....the other day l wanted to find threads on "natural tigris" (the laminate), did a search and a gazillion threads come up , most of them having only the word "natural" in the posts ...ok then, so l put the " "'s around them think it was like google...nope same thing...then l did "natural and tigris"..again same result...it was very frustrating....
So now, when l want to find a thread here about something in particular, l put it in quotes in google, and wah-lah, 9 times out of 10, the relevant threads/posts from here show up on page 1 or 2 on Google Still, l either need to learn how to use the search function properly (can someone tell me?) or if it's not me, then the search function needs to be made a bit more advanced?? I think too, that the main "building a home" forum is so large and has a diverse range of topics, the threads get buried and shoved back so quickly. I think a bit of streamlining and making some more specific forums would make the forum a bit more user friendly & help with reducing the same old threads (colorbond vs tiles for eg) coming up also. I and a couple of others have put forward some suggestions in the "suggest a forum" thread......am hoping admin might give them some consideration Re: Let's Use The Search Button 28Mar 11, 2009 1:24 am using Google, you can specify the site....
e.g. site:forum.homeone.com.au "natural tigris" leading to a better search option After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Just the oldies letting off steam! We are harmless……really!!!! Im sorta a newbie with only 200 posts and I have only just worked out how to use the search function - it takes me a while to work things out - I think there needs to be a bit of leeway for new members to get the hang of things...I don't know what is a suitable time frame though...I like the idea of streamlining things a bit to make it easier to search and navigate. But I can understand that this post may be a bit confronting for newbies who are only getting the hang of things! Lucky I have a bit of a sense of humour otherwise I might think Im in trouble! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Let's Use The Search Button 33Mar 11, 2009 9:50 am the mont Crikey! pretty intimidating environment for a newbie... I've been on a couple of forums lately where older (more posts) members will practically tell newbies to effectively "use the friggin' search engine"...and there are some fairly rude emoticons for this...I've always thought that this approach was counterproductive and off-putting for newer members. Yes, I've said to myself on the occasional concrete crack query "well you could have found this with a simple search" but rather I'll post a reply with a couple examples of the search results...generally the "newbie" (a term I despise) will catch on...generally in mild embarrassment. I think some people forget how flummoxed they were by certain aspects of the forum when they first started...searching, quoting, adding photos, formatting, looking for new posts, active threads...etc...and need to give new members a break. Hopefully, this forum is not one where "newbie" becomes a dirty word... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Let's Use The Search Button 35Mar 11, 2009 10:04 am Oh well ok. I really didn't think that's how it came across, that I was saying being a newbie was a dirty word.
I also post example threads for people. And I'm not suggesting that every thread should be deleted if there's something the same. But sometimes it borders on ridiculous, last week there was about 3 threads currently going on colorbond versus tiles. At one point, a thread was started and there was actually a current post in a thread on exactly the same topic in the 5 most recent posts. To me that's a bit much. I can't believe this could be considered an intimidationg environment, to have a discussion on how the forum can work more efficiently for everyone. If that's considered intimidating....... I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Let's Use The Search Button 37Mar 11, 2009 8:59 pm As Joles said it isn't to make anyone feel bad but in any forum the first point of call should always be search before posting a query.
I am 100% in agreeance with PPs - as more people join the threads are going to become more unwieldy so the search button maybe should become highlighted somehow? Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Let's Use The Search Button 39Mar 13, 2009 10:41 am Being a newbie myself, I can understand how people can get frustrated by repeated threads (hell even my first post was a new thread! but i did do many searches beforehand, honest! ) I know of some forums that require new members to have a certain number of posts before they can start new threads. Might be a little troublesome for the newer members but at least you can make sure they start contributing to the forum first before they are allowed to start new threads. That way they can also get a feel for the rules and "culture" of the forum first as well. Thoughts? Re: Let's Use The Search Button 40Mar 13, 2009 3:20 pm On the other hand, somebody said all posters should make an introduction before they post about anything else - but how can they do that without making a thread in "introductions"
I don't think we need any rules like posting x number of posts before you can start a thread - and anyway that would just encourage people to post meaningless drivel just to get the required number of posts or to hijack other threads because they're not allowed to start their own That sucks!
